Ooops! Wrong About That Guy

Are you thinking of either Ronnie Murphy? He was pretty highly touted but battled weight issues and never got any traction in the NBA. He was our first round pick in 1988.

This wasn't the 80's but in 1992 we took Dave Johnson in the 1st round too. I don't remember if he was overweight at all but he did flame out too.

Thanks, but no not Ronnie.

Audie Norris?
Not Audie either.

Thanks

Edit: Ok I figured it out. I was way off. Wrong decade. The guy I was trying to remember was
Dontonio Wingfield. Wrong about his talent too

I think I speak for most of us, when looking at this particular group and seeing the individual skillsets these guys have, this is a talented team.
The "new" guys...it will be cool to see what they actually bring.
Mario....Baze.....Ant....GaryTrent..all look like potential contributors.
Which got me thinking...has there ever been a player you thought was gonna really be something, but oh were you ever wrong...(not talking. Greg Oden here)
Mine...was Elliott Williams a few years back. Thought he had perennial all star written all over him..
Anybody else miss?
Larue Martin
Anybody remember him?

He was the guy drafted ahead of Bob McAdoo and Dr. J.

Ooops!

However....

The Portland Trail Blazers made Martin the first overall pick in the 1972 NBA Draft. Martin was also the No. three pick of the American Basketball Association draft by the Dallas Chaparrals.[14][15]

The 1972 NBA draft may have been controversially influenced. Chones had signed with the New York Nets of the ABA. It was rumored that North Carolina star Bob McAdoo, the unquestioned best available player available in the draft, had signed with the Virginia Squires of the rival American Basketball Association after a "secret" ABA draft took place, in which names of those drafted were not make public. Reportedly, NBA Commissioner Walter Kennedy advised NBA teams not to draft McAdoo.[16] Other reports were that a contract was signed and voided, because McAdoo was too young to have signed it and the NBA Buffalo Braves somehow knew this.[17] Yet another story was that the Portland negotiated with McAdoo on the eve of the draft but could not meet his demands.[8] Later, McAdoo was noted as the No. 1 pick of the 1972 American Basketball Association Draft.

Buffalo chose McAdoo with the pick behind Martin. The Milwaukee Bucks drafted Julius Erving with the No. 12 pick, but he was already playing in the ABA and remained with the Virginia Squires.

Why did Philadelphia get Erving rather than the Bucks?

Shareef Abdur-Rahim. I asked Rice what he thought about my fellow Cal Bear, he said Reef would be a star.

Larue Martin
Anybody remember him?

lol, my wife actually worked with him at Chicago Title after he retired from the NBA. Met him a couple times at a few different functions. Very nice guy and pretty humble but just not an NBA level player unfortunately.

He's still really good in the 3 ball league today...looks like a short Dick Gregory

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it yet but Greg fucking Oden falls directly under this category
