OT Oregon wildfires

I know nothing of Kate brown but listening to her speak at the briefing, she sounds like a real bitch. She says they have access to super tankers but obviously because of the smoke, not much they can do. I just don't know why this fire wasn't jumped n more quickly. When it started I remember watching it live thinking it would be huge if they couldn't control it. Why couldn't they bring in the super tankers then? It's just all bad
I didn't listen to the press conference, but it looks like this was grounded by the feds.

Stop being so sensitive

I hope those teens get raped in prison, over, and over, and over, till they commit suicide.

Eagle Creek fire has surrounded the Indian Springs fire and eaten it.

Bridge at Eagle Creek is very likely done for. :(

Eagle Creek fire is only 5% contained, but as of 24 hours ago, they saved Multnomah Falls building.

Containment date isn't until the 23rd, or more than 2 weeks away. :(

Wait, you went to LaSalle?!?

Oh it's on now!

I went to Gladstone. WE HATED YOU GUYS!

So true story, when I was a freshman some seniors went to LaSalle's football field and drove on it, cutting cookies on the grass and then hit the big wooden sign that said Welcome to LaSalle High School. Broken it in about 6 or 7 pieces. Naturally they got caught so they had to reseed the field and fix the sign. School year goes on and the sign still isn't fixed. They're told to fix the sign or they wouldn't graduate. So they they paid the first freshman they found in shop class $20 to fix it. That freshman was me. So I fixed the sign, did a really good job. Could never tell it was broken. This was a really large sign. Seniors were happy, our principal was happy, LaSalle's principal was happy. Sign got put back up over the entrance to the field. Except SlyFreshmanDog used plain old white Elmer's glue, hahahahaha. Sign lasted the summer but the fall rain quickly caused it to come apart and fall down. By then the guys who broke the sign were out of high school and nothing could be done.
This explains so much about you. SO much.......... :rotfl: By the way, is Gladstone really a place???

Hope all are safe up there....had some rain down here last night...relief! My son's best friend is out there fighting fires non stop...earining his check for sure...

Prepare for a cold snowy winter. Farmers Almanac predicts a colder than normal winter for Pacific Northwest.

Only 8000 firefighters are fighting dozens of fires out there.....let's hope they all come out ok....saw people preparing snacks and drinks for them....their money is pretty much tapped out this season

I was thinking about this last night and I wonder if they haven't arrested the kid because they know his name would become public record and they don't want people finding out who he is until things are more contained.

He was with a group of friends, being kids I'm sure they tweeted and facebooked about it. I imagine it's a bit of a process to get warrants to the parents of kids, their cell phone providers, Facebook, Instagram, etc. then to arrange times to have detectives interview the kids with a parent and attorney present.

I'm sure they're doing all those things as well..... but I also think they don't want his name to become public right in the middle of this. People are really emotional and upset about the whole thing.

I believe this is a Multnomah County Sheriff's Department investigation, seeing how they handled the Kyron Horman case this might also go unsolved.

It's pretty fucked up what the kid(s) did, what's even more fucked up is that grown ass people would look to hurt or kill a 15 year old kid over it though. That's beyond sick.

This. No one deserves to die for a mistake like this. I'm mad at the stupidity that they showed. But, they don't deserve to die or get raped in prison. Come on.

Yeah, not to impressed with the Farmers Almanac.

Looks like I was right...

http://www.oregonlive.com/wildfires..._demands_consequences_fo.html#incart_breaking

As public outrage mounts against a 15-year-old Vancouver boy suspected of throwing a smoke bomb that ignited the nation's No. 1 wildfire, many Oregonians are calling for stiff consequences.

He could be ordered to pay for the costs of fighting the Eagle Creek fire, to the tune of millions. His parents might have to foot some of the bill for the damage done. He also could face prison.

But those are all speculative. Police have made no arrests.

Still, the teenager and his group of friends already have felt the punishing scorn of an angry populace forced to leave their homes, breathe in smoke and ash and worry about the ravages to treasured trails and landmarks in the Columbia River Gorge.

A woman who said she witnessed the boy throw the smoke bomb into the Eagle Creek Canyon has described the group of friends giggling and taking a cellphone video of the deed Saturday afternoon.

State police initially said they would release the boy's identity, but changed their minds Thursday and said they wouldn't name him, even in the event of an arrest, because of the outcry and threats that he could face.

Kyron would be about 15 now, right? Could be him.

I'm not sure any sane person believes this kid/group of kids should face prison time or die. I do think they should face consequences, as well as their parents.

Exactly, accidents happen. The kid(s) have to live with what they did for the rest of their lives... that's punishment enough.

It's punishment enough that a 17 year old drunk driver hit a friend of mine(who was 4 at the time) fracturing his skull. Still has a noticeable scar.
My friend was crossing the street with his teenage sister. The driver in a statement said he saw them crossing the road and mistook the break for the gas.
He has to live with it for the rest of his life. Punishment enough.
Nah, not at all.

This kid/group of kids deserve to face punishment. Have them go help with the cleanup.
Have him learn and spend his summers until he's 18 volunteering fighting fires. Once he's 18 he can earn a paycheck if he chooses to continue in that line of work.
Until then it's all volunteer hours. Obviously his summers are free anyway and he needs something to do.

Plus colleges always like to see activities during the summer. Not sitting around doing nothing.
Volunteering fighting fires could be a good way to show colleges he's responsible. Certainly throwing a smoke bomb in a canyon isn't showing responsibility.

@UncleCliffy'sDaddy pretty sure you're 20+ years old than I. But I'd be quick to point out not all parents in this day and age are deadbeats who don't give a damn.
There are a couple on this forum and many I know personally, who would absolutely murder their children if they found out their kids destroyed someones mailbox or stole a pack of gum. @dviss1 is one of those parents.
Will also point out there have been parents who didn't care, even when you were growing up. My biological father could attest to that.

My kid would be the one telling those kids they should stop, something bad is going to happen, and that they're gonna get in trouble.

We've used this as a teaching moment about decision making.

I was thinking about this last night and I wonder if they haven't arrested the kid because they know his name would become public record and they don't want people finding out who he is until things are more contained.

They haven't arrested the kid because they are still doing an investigation. He is a minor. They're treating this correctly. What happens when you shoplift and you're a minor? Your parents get called and you go into their custody.

I don't think the kids will get charged with a felony because it's going to be hard to prove that they purposely tried to set the fire. I also never believe that children should be charged as adults.

The bottom line for me is that I hope these kids lives aren't ruined because of being stupid when they were 15.

I remember when I was 15 I was in Creston Park in broad daylight shooting at squirrels with a BB gun. You goddamn right I shouldn't have been doing that shit. The police came and drew their guns on me and everything. Had I done something stupid after the police came, I could have been killed that day. What did the police do? They took me home to my mother and I was grounded for over 2 months. The parents are going to pay enough for this already. I think the focus should be on what we should do to prevent forest fires because his smoke bomb could have easily been a lightning bolt.
