well it is only because of Stotts offense that he gets these assist #'s. He never had #'s like this under McMillan.

He gets assists because he studies film on where guys want the ball and he uses Lopez and Freeland to open up passing lanes. Nico can be a very smart playmaker when guys are looking for the pass. His no look pass is the best on the roster. Guys get assists because of court vision, not coaches style of play. I've said many times Nico is the reason Robin Lopez has career double doubles. Ask Lopez how Nico complements his game.

his assists went 1.5 apg nearly every year under McMillan to 5 apg under Stotts. Did he develop that court vision over the summer? I liked Nate alot but his offense was no where near as fluid as Stotts is/

That's the point, I think. Nate misused Batum. And others.

You do realize that there are many different types of offenses in the NBA, right?

I agree Stotts system is good for every player on the roster, not my point however. Nico is really young and he's vastly improved. One could say playing for the championship for France with Parker also helped. He had his best season for France this year as well. No knock on Stotts. I don't think the style is the main reason Nic has gotten great assist numbers as much as it has been playing with Robin Lopez as well as his own growth as a player. He has sacrificed his offensive game to an extent to focus on defense and assists though. His assists and rebounds are both way up from last season and Stotts coached that one as well. He doesn't have JJ Hickson in the way this year.

I pretty much see 4 kinds of offenses. Drive and kick. Pass around the perimeter looking for an open 3. Isolation. Guy runs around getting multiple picks set hoping to get open for a catch and shoot jumper.

So having JJ on the team was the reason Batum wasn't getting as many assists?

While the backcourt players have quickly developed an identity as one of the best shooting tandems in the league, Nicolas Batum, the team’s starting small forward, is developing his own reputation as one of the NBA’s fastest and most active players; according to data provided by SportVU, of 34 players averaging at least 35 minutes in the league, Batum has the highest average speed, and has traveled the highest total distance this year, logging a staggering 136.9 miles through his first 52 games. He’s one of the team’s main catalysts, barely trailing Lillard in assists, but he sees himself as a gap-filler and is committed to helping the team any way he can, whether by slashing, cutting, screening, or passing. “My goal is to improve my all-around game, set better screens, and help drive and kick to the shooters.”

5. Walton with the ball at the top of the key with 4 guys in motion, passing or dropping off the ball to the open man.

I would add pick and roll, though it is really a sort of isolation play to get the guard defended by a slower bigger guy.

I still see just about every team out there running the Flex offense to some degree and then running options off of that base offense.

Yea, I think that this would be a lateral move with the big potential for taking a step backwards during free agency because of no guarantee.

Ya but if Deng signed a 3 year deal with the Blazers for around what Batum is getting it might not look to bad.

or a easy way to clear cap space for LeBron without losing a step this season

Yep, I 100% agree! It's clear Batum is benefiting more in Stotts system than Nates system.

With out a doubt Batum has benefited from Stott's system.

While I am new here, I did notice one member here who had a signature where it essentially said "Nobody puts Batum in a corner!" obviously referencing Dirty Dancing. That just about sums up McMillans offense versus Stotts's offense.

Coach Stotts IMO, has done a magnificent job in assessing the team and players and then giving each player a role. The best I have seen since Dunleavy days and of the course the Doctor Jack Ramsey.

The only knock I have on Batum is he just isn't aggressive enough overall. I so wish that he was born here in the United States versus overseas because he would (IMO) have a little bit more street ball in him or just aggression overall. I have met him in person and he's a really nice guy and a stand up guy as well.

Yep but that is a HUGE, HUGE, HUGE, gamble. I can't stress HUGE enough. If we were a bigger city like Chicago, LA, or NY then I wouldn't fret over it as much.

I was being sarcastic but honestly if he wants to win the next 4 rings and he's willing to take a huge paycut Portland would be as good a place as any. Saying he'd be a perfect fit here is obvious but hey. He'd be a perfect here.

I'm really not in love with either player.

Personally, I really like American born and raised basketball players (With some exception; Mark Gasol), they just miss that element of the American street-ball attitude and Batum is clearly (To me) missing that ingredient.

I've been out of the loop. Is there any legs to this?

My Trade Deadline moves
Although I haven't posted here in awhile I was getting on the trade Waiters or Irving train for awhile and am now getting off it until at earliest next trade deadline.

With that said and based on some of the rumors plus how teams are going here is what I think:

Trade Deng to Portland for Batum.
-Right now Deng is the better player and will probably remain so for a few more years and helps Portland in the playoffs more than Batum could. For us we get a young SF with some well rounded skills that would fit well in this team. He is also locked up for the next 2 years after this one.

Trade Andy and Jack to Portland for Okafer and Len.
-Going into the season they were looking like tankers and well it didn't work out. Losing Bledsoe hurts so getting a back up combo guard who has shown to be very capable on a playoff team in Jack will help them and Andy would improve their front court either as a starter or a high energy guy off the bench for them. We get the expiring contract of Okafer out of it and a young center that is getting minimal minutes currently but could develop nicely in the future.

That would give us a roster of:
PG-Irving/Della
SG-Waiters/Miles
SF-Batum/Clark
PF-Bennett/TT
C-Zeller/Len

That is also the starting line-up that I would run with. Sure it might not work at first but it's worth a try and gives us a look at what 4/5 of the pieces expected to be big players for the future look together. This also doesn't keep us from going into the draft closed to drafting any player at any position, to include PG.
