Viewership reached an all-time low, according to reports, with the 2021 show averaging only 9.85 million people per Nielsen's Live + Same Day preliminary national numbers. That's a 58 percent decline from the 2020 Oscars, which drew 23.64 million viewers and previously held the record for worst ratings in the show's history.

Oscars viewership through the years 2014: 43.7 million
2015: 37.3 million
2016: 34.4 million
2017: 32.9 million
2018: 26.5 million
2019: 29.6 million
2020: 23.6 million
2021: 9.8 million

I guess people don't like out of touch, elitist celebrities virtue signaling with their woke politics on live TV? If only we could have predicted this.

They shouldn't have swept the homeless people around Union Station under the rug. More people would have watched to see if some shit went down.

Or maybe fewer people watched because hardly anyone watched the movies that were up for awards this year.

The Oscars have become entirely about politics and not at all about entertainment. I stopped watching a few years ago.

Last week, an Oscars producer who spoke on the condition of anonymity told the New York Times data found that “minute-by-minute post-show ratings analysis indicated that ‘vast swaths’ of people turned off their televisions when celebrities started to opine on politics.”

Keep in mind that the ratings have already been plummeting for years.

Yes but even if there were no political talk during last night's awards acceptance I still think the awards were going to be very low ratings because so few people watched the movies that were nominated.

Normally I'll watch some of the Oscars but this year the only person/award I had any interest in was Frances McDormand because I'm a huge Coen Brothers fan and have loved her past work. This year I didn't watch because I hadn't seen any of the movies.

Didn’t watch it but found it noteworthy and somewhat ironic that the LA city government broke up an existing homeless camp outside Union Station downtown LA solely so wealthy elites and celebrities could witness Best Picture be given to ... a movie about the struggles of homelessness?

If that's what it takes then I think we need to schedule a lot of award shows in Portland.

We would have rather watched AI. But, oh, well....

Nope, has to be liberals fault somehow.

Ratings on things dropping always gets thrown as some gotcha on liberals as if it somehow shows their ideas and ideals are wrong.

Yep.

The only thing ratings show is that people have better things to do with their time at that moment. It doesn't reflect how people feel about stuff politically, or socially. It just means that in todays world, where movies aren't as important to people and we're dealing with a pandemic, no one gives two rips about awards shows.

I've never understood why anyone gives a shit about these kinds of shows in the first place.

I just got tired of these (mostly liberal) actors espousing their political views within this format.

People still actually watch that shameless display of ego stroking and mutual masturbation??? All for a gilt plated doorstop?? The collective IQ of this country continues to plummet……..

Perhaps not. Hence, the ratings plummet.

Cept when you agree with said views...

Exactly. I don't begrudge those who enjoy it, much like I don't begrudge those who like MMA stuff, but it's not a surprise to me when it's raining are getting worse.

People are upset Chadwick Boseman was snubbed for best actor. The academy gave it to Hopkins who probably is too old to win another.

Should have went to Boseman.

They switched around the Oscar's to have best actor last than snubbed Boseman.

Yep, I got sick of watching a few years ago when the Oscars became nothing more than a televised pro-Trump MAGA rally of wealthy, mostly white, celebrities.

It just became too right-wing. Not on my watch!

I didnt see many of the films. Which movie was Boseman nominated for this year?

That show sucked for decades. Who gives a flying shit about it. Glorified prima donnas. I would rather watch the Yankees lose to Baltimore (that's hard to take) instead of watching those asses..
