Knowing when they need to kick it into another gear and having another gear are two different things. I look at that roster and I see three vets that are all past their primes, one very young, very talented player and a bunch of nobodies. Sure Rose was an MVP several years ago, but his game relied on unreal athleticism that has abandoned him after so many injuries. He's not even close to the player he was then. And, he's never been a great 3-point shooter. So, he doesn't even have that to fall back on.
Rose and Noah are both injury prone and it' a LONG season. Melo hasn't had the injury history those two have had. So, his decline is more gradual, but make no mistake he is in a slow, gradual decline.
Porzingas is their future, but right now, he's still a young player trying to adjust to the grueling NBA schedule and learning how to win. He's a VERY nice piece for their future, but right now, he's not ready to carry a team on his back.
So, that leaves an aging, inefficient Carmelo as their go to guy. That recipe hasn't worked in several years and surrounding him with other old, past their prime players isn't going to change that.
