I dont know how old you are, but ABC, NBC etc showed IDK, thirty games a year on national TV. They had to keep ratings up, I remember Boston, NY, LA and what ever team they were playing. The Boston always had a strong rooting section nationaly

I moved to Seattle a few years ago and it is definitely more diverse than Portland. My theory on why Oregon is so white goes back to the essential compromise of admitting Oregon into the union in 1859. Oregon was a free state, but it was written into the Oregon constitution that African Americans were prohibited from settling Oregon. The clause wasn't repealed until 1927.

For the first 70 years of statehood it was illegal to live in Oregon if you were an African-American.

And if it wasn't for all of the ship building that went on at Swan Island during WWII there probably still wouldn't be any black people in Oregon ... one more reason to hate the Japs, Degos and Krauts

Your site says that Federal law superseded State law, which was never enforced and later taken off the books for cosmetic reasons.

Although enabling legislation was never passed and the clause was voided by the 14th and 15th Amendments passed after the Civil War, the ban remained a part of Oregon’s constitution until it was finally repealed in 1927.
