LeBron James wore a Yankees' hat and fraternized with Terrell Owens before the Browns played the Cowboys in Cleveland on Sunday.

"It didn't bother me," said Braylon Edwards. "As I've gotten to know LeBron, LeBron isn't a Cleveland guy. LeBron only plays for the Cavaliers, and who knows if he even likes the Cavaliers? He doesn't like the Indians. He doesn't like the Browns. He's a guy from Akron who likes everybody but his hometown."

"I don't know how that's possible, but it is what it is, and he is who he is. You know, it's LeBron."

Akron is not Cleveland

It is very stupid to call the Browns and Indians teams from his hometown.

Exactly. Braylon must be forgetting since all those footballs miss his hands and hit him in th head.

Does that mean the Nets aren't your hometown team unless you live in E.Rutherford?

Or you can't like the hometown Devils unless you live in Newark? (I think that's where they play, I'm not a hockey fan)

I'm willing to bet that there are plenty of sports fan who root for the hometown team that don't live within the city limits of the actual stadium.

When did New Jersey become a city?

Of course there are plenty of people in Akron that root for the clowns and Indians, but it is far enough away that isn't automatically the hometown team. But what do I know, I only lived there before.

I hope I didn't say that New Jersey was a city
It was always my definition that you're hometown team was the local team, and wasn't restricted to city limits.

Everybody knows LeBron favors New Jersey, duh

Local is relative. Who is the local NFL team for Erie, PA?

I'd say Eagles, based on state representation. FWIW I don't know where Erie, PA is, but I've got a feeling you chose a place that was closer to another pro-stadium. I still have always gone by state limits first. If there is no pro-team, then sure go by proximity. The Mets and Yankees are both local teams for NJ residents.

Just because he is famous and plays for the Cavs doesn't mean he must change all his favourite teams that he liked growing up before he was on the Cavs.

I believe it would be worse if all a sudden he bangwagons onto Clevelands teams just because he is on their team. Plus, didn't he say he roots for all Cleveland teams after his favourites?

I think most people go by their state first, as GM mentioned. However, he doesn't HAVE to be a fan of Ohio teams. He grew up being a Yankee fan so you can't change that just because he's playing in Cleveland.

Sigh. Before you posted the map:

Wait, when did TV become the definer of hometown team?

To me, hometown team means you can turn on the tv and watch the team, pick up the paper and read about the team, turn on the radio and hear talk about the team, etc.

If you have to go out of your way to follow a team, then it's not you local team.

I know what you posted. I just don't understand why you didn't take the couple of seconds to find out where it is.

because...

, but I've got a feeling you chose a place that was closer to another pro-stadium. I still have always gone by state limits first.

It is interesting how we have to redefine what is local, as technology has redefined what is in proximity. You might even say that the way in which we can communicate with society the more of a real boundary than any geography. There's technology, and there's also social psychology definitions of which in-group we're apart of. Distance might be less important than identifying oneself as being part of a larger group (statehood, and state pride).

There is a psychological difference between teams that are broadcast into your area and a hometown team.

When a municipality invests a significant amount of energy in making sure they are distinct from another larger, close municipality, that changes the hometown equation. Akron use to be that way. As industry has moved out of the area, they have aligned themselves more with Cleveland
