I've met a couple people with Down Syndrome who very pointedly told me that they hate being called "retarded." They prefer "mentally disabled." It's not some PC thing. They simply don't like to be called that. Since it really seems to hurt feelings, I will never call one "retarded."

I also have little people friends. Being called a midget makes them cringe and hurts their feelings. I think it's because you're kind of objectifying them, making them feel like less of a person, by calling them, a midget. They want to be treated as people, aka "little people." Similarly, I do not want to be called a ***got. It's derogatory and objectifying. Why use the term if it hurts their feelings?

What word should I use to insult stupid people, that packs a punch, and will make them angry as I intend?

The word will need a hard consonant, like the t in retard. Dim doesn't have that. Stupid and idiot do, kind of, but not enough, and are overused.

I have an idea, you little kabatapee. Ughdripocrap. But in a generation, the ughdripocraps will demand that we use a replacement word, like retard.

Some people who are below the median BMI are offended by the word "skinny".

Some people with less developed senses of humor are offended by the word "boring".

Some people with a systematic abundance of DHT are offended by the word "bald".

Some people who don't subscribe to political correctness are offended by words like "offensive," intolerant," or "bigot".

Should all those words be stricken from our lexicons too?

Every day I'm insulted about 20 times. I feel I have to put up with all the fuckin gits and cockneys. Do I whine about the dolt cretins? They all look alike to me. I can't tell the difference between a twit and a nitwit.

Please note I ask as a friend of a family with a daughter with Down's, as somebody who volunteered in the "Challenger Baseball League", and also bristles at others' use of the word "retard". I'm just seeking to understand the logic of those who arbitrarily elevate the importance of one word over another.

When enough people agree that they should, maybe they should. Who am I to judge this early in the game?

Retard is a pejorative with a significant, publicly justified movement against it. Don't use it.

I let these sorts of things emerge, and follow the lead.

It's too much work micromanaging my interactions with every word in the dictionary. If someone tells me that a word I'm using is offensive, it's way way easier to stop using the word like a gentleman than to argue my freedom to be an asshole to this person.

It's like when I used the word gyp not knowing the historical meaning and got taken to task by my Hungarian co-worker about it. Now I don't use it because I'm not an asshole. Easy peasy.
