Oden is god and mixum in a ducks doomed thread.

Priceless and suicidal

I don't know if the OP is being serious or not, but this isn't much of a smoking gun. Paying for background information on PSA's is okay by the NCAA. Paying someone to secure the PSA isn't. Oregon did the former not the later and they did it above board using University checks that they absolutely knew would be scrutinized. Cash is the currency of choice of cheaters

Maybe we're just really bad at cheating because we're so new at it :grin:

Wow. The headline and the first five paragraphs are slanted to imply wrongdoing. Then the entire rest of the article, IOW, the facts, paint a clear picture of no wrongdoing. I love journalism.

From the UofO...

The athletics department paid for services rendered by a pair of scouting services that were processed through the athletics department business office to Complete Scouting Services and New Level Athletics. This is no different than services purchased by a number of colleges and universities throughout the country.

This is something we remain confident that is within the acceptable guidelines allowed by the NCAA and occurred with the knowledge of the department’s compliance office.

We have previously stated that we have not been in contact with anyone from the NCAA or Pacific-10 Conference in regards to these practices and that situation remains unchanged.

It's a good thing we're not BYU here, because if that's "going down", we'd be suspended.

wait...that didn't make sense.

Sounds shady to me. Basically Oregon paid Will Lyles $25K to secure Seastrunk. That's what I take from it.

For anyone that thinks that $25K seems a bit too much I've read on other boards that there have been reports that there are some scouting services that charge up to $40K.

The Ducks broke absolutely no rules. You'll probably get SC/OSU/UW fans saying "cheaters!!" but they're just bitter. There's nothing to hide.

It is sad that after reading the article you came away with that assumption.

Some people won't see what they don't want to see.

So you think the Ducks are so dumb that they intentionally cheated above ground?

A bank robber walks into a bank, hands the teller his ID and his debit card. Draws $100 out of his own account, and then produces a hand gun and tells her to put the rest of the money in the bag.

You think the Ducks are that guy? Hey, we're cheating, we don't give a shit if anyone knows?

the question I have on this story is if so many programs use these sorts of services (which doesn't seem to be disputed... they wouldn't exist if they didn't get paid), how come only the dollars the Ducks have laid out are being publicly sited? My best guess is other schools aren't being so forthcoming about their expenses as I'm sure the amount paid by Auburn, USC, Florida etc... would be deemed newsworthy whether their payments were comparatively little or exorbitant.

From Canzano...

http://www.oregonlive.com/sports/or...sf/2011/03/canzano_oregon_football_takes.html

Oregon believes it broke no rules here. Again, for the NCAA to decide. Kelly himself will tell you he stopped using Flenory's services when the NCAA instituted a rule last year that prohibited those types of payments to people running camps. And that's good. Kelly told me this week, "We've done nothing wrong."

Still, the connection with Lyles is a disgrace to the university. It was wrong. This mess didn't create itself. Oregon engaged in a business relationship with what amounts to a glorified runner. And the Ducks got dragged down because of it.

Whatever Lyles sold Oregon -- contact numbers and information, we're led to believe -- came with a deeper, darker price. Worst case, Oregon knew it was buying players. At the very least, this transaction comes with serious question about why Oregon paid a slick character so much public money.

From the NCAA bylaw which PERMITS THIS EXACT THING)

13.14.3 Recruiting or Scouting Services. An institution may subscribe to a recruiting or scouting service
involving prospective student-athletes, provided the institution does not purchase more than one annual
subscription to a particular service and the service: (Adopted: 1/1/02, Revised: 1/16/10)
(a) Is made available to all institutions desiring to subscribe and at the same fee rate for all subscribers;
(b) Publicly identifies all applicable rates;
(c) Disseminates information (e.g., reports, profiles) about prospective student-athletes at least four times per
calendar year;
(d) Publicly identifies the geographical scope of the service (e.g., local, regional, national) and reflects broad-based
coverage of the geographical area in the information it disseminates;
(e) Provides individual analysis beyond demographic information or rankings for each prospective student-athlete
in the information it disseminates; (Revised: 4/13/10)
(f ) Provides access to samples or previews of the information it disseminates before purchase of a subscription;
and
(g) Provides video that is restricted to regularly scheduled (regular-season) high school, preparatory school or
two-year college contests and for which the institution made no prior arrangements for recording. (Note: This
provision is applicable only if the subscription includes video services.)

I think some of you "doth protest too much" when it comes to declaring the football team's innocence. Maybe Oregon did nothing wrong -- and I'm certainly willing to believe that -- but if the NCAA is sending investigators I would say that it doesn't look great for them.
