WoooT! I read an article about CK the otehr day and figured this was coming soon.

Supposedly it's two years out.

I will take it and I'm still very happy. I wasn't a huge MB fan in the last few years and was very afraid we would lose CK this year. CK IMO is a offensive genius and works very well with QB's.:ghoti::clap::wub:

Not sure how I feel about this. In one sense, I'm glad CK is staying on board. On the other hand, his contributions to this team were in his offensive genius. Obviously you lose a little of that with asking him to take on the full responsibilities of head coach.

Interesting.

First order of business for CK as head coach? Fire Nick Alliotti.

wow... crisis averted! I'm not too big on coaches in pro hoops making a difference, but there is no question that that college football coaches do and Kelly seems to be a gem. I'm sure he would have been somewhere else next season if UO hadn't made a commitment to him.

I agree but it might be hard for CK to fire him this year with MB the AD. I would think though if NA costs us some wins next year CK will fire NA and find his own DC. I'm hoping NA just steps aside and CK can find a new DC but that might be asking for to much.

Not what I'm hearing. I'm hearing it takes effect immediately following the Holiday Bowl.

That's what I heard too. It will be interesting to hear the official announcement. If the Ducks are smart they will make Kelly the head coach immediately. As a Beaver fan I hope they wait 2 years.

Will be interesting to hear who they name as the new offensive coordinator to replace Chip Kelly. In the spread offense circle, Chip's a pretty well-known guy and knows all of the offensive minds.

Talk about quite an ascension. From OC at a Division 1-AA school in New Hampshire to the guy who replaces the dean of PAC-10 coaches ... in the span of a little more than a year.

Amazing.

Listening to the press conference now, and they're saying there is no set timeline, but Belloti said he will keep coaching until he feels like he's ready to be done, so at least another year or two if not longer.

PLEASE FIRE ALLIOTTI!!!!!! Holy crap, this team has talent on D, but it is not being utilized. My guess is MB gets one more year as a farewell tour.

I think there is a timeline but they don't want to say in the press conference. I would think 2 years max's or CK is gone anyway. I'm sure CK isn't going to wait around to long. You have to get a HC job while your a hot OC or it might be to late. I would think CK would get a raise to almost HC salary and Oregon isn't going to want to pay for two HC's for very long.:dunno:

I agree and if it is only one more year that will give CK time to find another DC.

If they don't do this after the Holiday Bowl, they will probably do it after the 2009 season. Doesn't make sense to drag this out very long. Not good for recruiting to have a lame duck head coach (no pun intended) for a long time. Kids want consistency in leadership.

I know this will come as a shock (especially to Pops), but I have a couple dumb questions to ask:

1. Why hasn't the spread offense caught on in the NFL? Is it because players have more speed in the NFL and they'd shut it down? Or, is it just a matter of time?

2. Given that the spread offense hasn't caught on and it seems kind of quirky, why do highly rated recruits who have pro aspirations pick a university where it's run? By 'quirky' it seems like QBs have had an especially difficult time making the transition in the NFL. Maybe the same is not true for other positions -- I could imagine it might help receivers.

I second that motion!!

Wow, this sure is a shocker to me. I have mixed feelings about this. While Belotti has been wonderful for the UO, he has been around awhile and nothing lasts forever...and Chip Kelly has certainly proven himself. I guess one thing is for certain: the high powered, spread offense will be around for years to come :ohno:

I think the biggest problem is the speed of NFL linebackers. When the Ducks play teams with really good, fast linebackers and safeties (such as USC), it usually doesn't work so well. There's plenty of other reasons too, such as too much risk of injury on the QB.

Well, every recruit has their reasons for picking a particular school. And just because a team runs a certain style offense, it doesn't hurt the player that much. I recall people saying Dennis Dixon was a probable first round pick before he got injured. The better you can do the things that NFL scouts are looking for, the more attention you're going to get, regardless of your team/offense. That's why there's plenty of players in the NFL from small, no-name colleges these days.

Hope these answer your questions a little :)

Spread worked fine last year vs USC, DDix had Sedrick Ellis and Lawrence Jackson going every which way. But to beat a great team like SC you need the GREAT QB and GREAT Running attack. Dixon made a lot of plays on the fly, made a lot of broken plays go for first downs with his feet.
But it doesn't work in the NFL because teams are too fast.

Interesting. Not sure if I would have hired a guy with no relevant head coaching experience, but hey...whatever. (Mike Leach? Brian Kelly?) I wonder how he'll do recruiting? Aliotti needs to start packing his bags.

CK was head coach at his last job even though it was a small college. CK is going to be a great coach IMO. He is the one that made Dixon so good last year. He works well with QB's and Dixon gives CK all the credit for his big improvement. He was going to get a HC job this year if he wanted it. I think by next year he could pick from many good HC job's and Oregon really didn't want to lose him.

they better make him head coach, or some team is gonna get him as HC. just like the guy from texas who was named the heir for mack brown.

Great news, the only thing that would make me happier is if Sabonis came out of retirement and averaged a triple double for the Blazers.

Fyi, the Seattle sports talk radio people last night said the Ducks did it because they were afraid UW would hire him out from under them. No idea if there was any truth to that and I'd be shocked if it wasn't pure conjecture on their part.

Edit: by the way, thanks for the spread scoop!

Well, not UW as much as Syracuse... On the MSP they(Oregon's AD) said they weren't scared of Washington at all. Syracuse is a 6 hour car ride from his home on the east coast, and they are in a BCS conference. They said UDub wasn't exactly looking for a coach like Kelley and were lookin' for some more experience from the HC position (even though I think a young, genious who thinks oustide the box is the best way to go, specially for a struggling program)

Kelley thinks we will win a title at Oregon, we wanted to keep Kelley, we are giving him a pay raise, and sometime in the next couple seasons he will be the Head Coach, and I think our program will take another big step forward. I think Chip's goals are to put this program among the elite in the country, and I think we do have the resources to do it.

They said that on the recruiting trails, Bellotti would be visiting a recruit and they would ask "Is Chip gonna be there? I really want to play for him". Which is why we have a good shot to land another #1 RB recruit (Bryce Brown i think his name is) in the country (We got Stewart from Washington a couple years ago) and have a bunch of 4-5 stars looking at us... we also have all the tools on our team right now for another double digit win season next year (as does Oregon State right now, gotta give the Beavs some love, keep your heads up my friends!).

This would be the wrong time to leave Oregon right now, as your resume would get even better after next year with...

Masoli, Blount, Maehl, Dickson on offense coming back... Paysinger, Byrd (hopefully), Thurmond, Ward, Matthews, etc on D coming back. I hope we can build on this season, and with steady QB play throughout the season, i like our chances... and we got Chris Harper who is going to break out next year and is a phenominal 4 star recruit fresh on our team, LaMichael James, and Darron Thomas will probably red-shirt next year and have 2 years once Masoli graduates to dominate, as he is a special player!!!

I know i'm blabbling on, but i'm just in such a good mood from my 2 sports teams right now! (Ducks football and Blazers basketball).

Edit - mobes, to answer your Q on why recruits want to play in this system...

Its because its fun, it really really really gets the most out of players ability, its almost a guarantee that it will be a high flying offense that piles on the yards. Players love that... Specially RBs and WRs, whose skills really become apparent in a system like Oregon/Florida/Missouri etc... For QBs, its a bit tougher on the transfer to the NFL, but for college, they love it as well.

rofl. Now THAT's pretty funny.

It's good to be excited about next year, but the Ducks are losing some key players...Jeremiah Johnson, Patrick Chung, Nick Reed, J-Will, and Max Unger are leaving some pretty big shoes to fill.

I read rumors after the UW/UO game that UW was prepared to offer Kelly an offer that would make him the 3rd highest paid pac 10 coach besides Petey and Bellotti (Is bellotti the 2nd highest paid???) apparently they had donors lined up to buy out willingham's contract.

No, he was offensive coordinator at New Hampshire, not head coach.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chip_Kelly

He's not the one who made Dennis Dixon good. Dennis Dixon was good to begin with.

I understand that other teams were probably going to hire him. That doesn't change the fact that he's unproven as a head coach and as a recruiter. With 2.5 million to offer a coach, I think I'd have wanted a little bit of a better PROVEN track record.

I think that is wrong. CK was New Hampshire OC at first but the last year or maybe two he was also the head coach. I will go check to make sure I'm right.
