Hits a little too close to home.

"The problem was the cartilage was wearing down," the 29-year-old Howard said. "I have been playing basketball for a very long time. When you have the bone rubbing on bone it just brings a lot of pain. Every step or every movement I was making, it was just a lot of pain. I didn't want to put myself or my teammates through that by trying to play through that.

This could be huge long term if the problem truly is chronic, like he's saying. Also, is PRP just the go-to treatment now? Looks like they don't do microfractures anymore.

PRP may help with the pain for a while with rest like it did for ROY, however once you start playing BBall again it won't take long for it to start getting very sore again. There are some new procedures out but he'd likely have to take a yr off and I don't know if those procedures would stand up to the rigors of pro BBall.

Wow that's a huge blow to Houston. Then again, it seems Houston plays better when Howard isn't playing! :D

During the regular season, with a soft schedule, but they aren't going anywhere in the playoffs without a healthy Dwight Howard.

The clutchfans thread on this is a good read,,btw.

I'm not upset by this fortune...

Me either. I'm desensitized by NBA injuries now. And tbh don't really care if other players get injured anymore. Just not ours. We've been through that gauntlet already...

Shit happens, sucks for Howard but bodies break down. Us Blazer fans are like that cop who works in Detroit, we've seen so much that nothing affects us.

Wow. I thought we had a terrible history with franchise centers. We only got varying degrees of glimpses of Bowie, Sabonis, and Oden. Houston has had some in-their-prime centers that have fallen apart.

It's Sampson, Yao and now Howard? Are there others?

Dang I had no idea

Yeah, but he was already like 50 (almost as old as Oden looked) and had a long, productive career. Plus, Houston got a VERY long, VERY productive career from Hakeem - the player they took right before we took Bowie. So, fuck 'em!

At first I thought you were making a joke that he was much older than his given age, but even then, he was like 43 when he got hurt.

Both. He was listed as almost 43, but thought to be even older.

He didn't say all the cartilage is gone. Has he had surgery on his knees?

I haven't seen the X-ray so I can't say for sure. I remember the championship Bulls players would ice their knees while on the bench. Playing a lot of basketball seems to take a toll on the body.

Maybe bone on bone means he's going to do gay porn.

Sucks about his knees.

As for their injury history, I'm sure those two titles (you know, with arguably one of the best C's to ever play the game) help them get over the pain a bit.

Didn't they win one with Sampson too?

Nope. they did go to the finals with him (and (H)Akeem) though. Lost to Boston in 86.

Yep, the Rockets upset the Lakers in the WCF, but then lost to the 67-win Celtics in the finals. That 86 Celtics team was the best of the Larry Bird era. That was the year Walton won 6th Man of the Year. Their front court depth, featuring 4 future Hall of Famers, was able to overcome the Rockets twin towers.

I haven't always hated the Rockets. I LOVED them in 1986 when they knocked off the defending champion Lakers. Everyone expected another Lakers-Celtics rematch, but the young, upstart Rockets pulled off a huge upset and bumped off the Lakers in 5 games.
