Great move by the Warriors.
 
I like that. I hope they go back to the name "San Francisco Warriors" too.
 
Maybe their consultant Jerry West can climb out on the middle of Golden Gate Bridge and talk Wilt Chamberlain into making a comeback.
 
Man, if Vancouver is seen as Kentucky, Klamath Falls must seem like Ethiopia to you Northern Oregonians.
 
Not so sure it is a good move. They have great fan base in the east bay. People who live in the "city" are not your typical NBA fan. The place will not be as loud that is for sure.

I did my time in Klamath (1982-1989)... formative years (kindergarten through sixth grade). I knew Trevor Darrah well (he of the memorial soccer field at KU). If I never have to go back, I will die a happy man.

Golden State is so vague, are they a hit of acid or a rival to Sunny D? My name suggestion is the Golden Gate Warriors to be Bay Area inclusive. Regardless, great move for them

Fine, if they don't mind losing their fan base. But the way they play, that probably isn't an issue.
 
for a shitty a place as oakland is, it's extremely easy to get to that area. the BART drops you off at the front door of the sports complex down there. meanwhile getting in and out of SF is a nightmare. When I've gone to giants games it's a mess. maybe this new location will be better traffic wise but i highly doubt it.
 
How far is Oakland from SF? Where do G.State players live now? Are there nice parts of Oakland?
 
Oakland & SF are separated by the Bay - actual distance, not far, but getting across you need Bay Bridge (bad traffic) bus (takes forever) or BART (quick but doesn't go everywhere).

There are a lot of nice parts of Oakland. It has an undeserved rep. Vibrant diverse city. There was a great video, Rebels of the 70s, the A's, the Raiders and Oakland - puts a lot in context and also makes clear why Oakland fans won't follow teams that leave.

They did just lose the Niners though.

I doubt this move will lose that many fans. The team was already supported by people all over the Bay Area, not just Oakland residents (though they like to think they comprise most of the attendees). The Warriors have been selling out games with just legit/hardcore fans, but moving them to SF will bring a TON more people.

Look at the Giants moving from Candlestick to AT&T Park. Candlestick was a shithole but attending games there had some significance as far as proving you were a fan. Now most of the people at AT&T go for some kind of adventure and don't really care much about the games. The hardcore fans are hardcore fans. They'll follow the team regardless, even if all the new yuppies/cool kids attending the games piss them off. Meanwhile the team is raking in the dough.

People in Oakland are already making a ruckus over this move, but I don't see any argument as to why they deserve to keep the team. The Warriors have the oldest arena in the league. They're a Bay Area team playing in the 3rd biggest city in the Bay. Oakland is the 8th biggest city in the state. The area surrounding the arena offers no amenities in the way of restaurants, bars, or anything at all to do. They've had years and years to do something about Oracle and the Oakland Colliseum but have done nothing besides the band-aid renovation back in 1996.
 
Fact is, Warriors never embraced Oakland. The A's and Raiders, when they were most successful, did. They played on Oakland's gritty, tough, blue colllar image as players and teams. Like the vid "Rebels of Oakland" describes. One Raiders fan quoted says that everyone back then sat together "Black, white, old, young, everyone drank from the same bottle. And then threw it at someone."

NBA, under Stern, has been built on celebrity culture, $1000 seats, movie star players. I guess they think SF is a better fit than Oakland. But you are more likely to see Giants fans at Kings than at Warriors games. Question is, will they develop enough of a following in SF? They drew fans from not just Oakland, but the East Bay suburbs are still a lot closer to Oakland than to SF, and the Peninsula fans who are not served by BART will find there is no place to park in the new area. BTW, that is really really unstable ground so they better check their earthquake fitting.

Frankly, I don't give a damn. Whether I dislike them in Oakland or in SF is immaterial. This is just one more reason to dislike them.

Exactly. And there is money in those suburbs too.

I lived in SF in the 80's and I love the city, but this was during a time when the people that lived in the city voted down (year after year) every proposal to build a downtown ballpark. And one of the reasons for this (and the reason why the city is so great) is that it is comprised of people from all over the country (and the world) They don't live and die with their local sports team because it is not THEIR team. A large percentage could care less. The burbs on the other hand are passionate about their teams. One reason why the niner's are moving closer to San Jose. The Warriors in SF will be fine. But the passionate fans in the east bay will suffer for it.

Your first paragraph is spot on but where are you coming up with the rest? SF residents more likely to go to Kings games than Warriors games? What? Peninsula fans will take Caltrain which goes from SJ (and even further south) to just a few blocks from the new arena, same as they do for Giants games.

A lot of the Warriors' die hard fans do live in and around Oakland and the East Bay, but if they're really die hard fans then are they going to completely abandon the team for moving across the bay to SF? Like I said before, the Warriors play in the oldest arena in the league and there's no way in hell Oakland is going to help them get a new one if they won't even help the Raiders or A's. I'm sure the W's will make up any STH's or attendees lost with new fans at the SF arena.

New ownership wanted the team to be in SF and didn't make much of an effort to keep them in Oakland. But do you really think Oakland would ever have accommodated them with a new venue? Lobbying the city to help them build a new arena would be a waste of time and the team can't continue to play at Oracle forever.

It said it was privately funded, so they wouldn't have needed the city of Oakland's help, presumably.
And yes, they will easily replace the fans by numbers in the seats. But, I think was pointed out earlier, the crowd seems likely to change if they cater to a different group to go to the games, and it is unlikely to still have the "best crowd in the league". But who knows.
 
I'm judging by the fact that I almost never see anyone at Warriors games wearing any Giants of 49ers stuff. But I see a fair amount in Sacramento. Admittedly not a scientific study, just what I see. They may draw SF fans in future.

I don't know how die hard East Bay Warriors fans are. I think you may underestimate how some would feel about a team leaving Oakland for SF. I know how A's fans felt when Barry Zito became a Giant. I turned my Zito bobblehead facing the wall and took down the poster.

We'll see. Winning cures a lot. So far the W's haven't done a lot of that.

Good point on the privately funded aspect. FWIW Giants fans continue to be very good despite a higher % of yuppies and people attending games just because its something cool to do. Anyone who's sat in the lower bowl of Warriors games knows its mostly yuppies in suits as it is anyway. And back when the Warriors made the playoffs in 07 all of a sudden all kinds of asshats were Warriors fans yet the arena was as loud as ever.

Don't get me wrong, I'm going to hate that all of a sudden everyone is a Warriors fan after I've been torturing myself watching this franchise my whole life. But I think its good for the franchise that we're moving to SF. I'm definitely biased in that I've lived on the peninsula my whole life and will thoroughly enjoy taking a 15 min Caltrain ride to the city and get dropped off a few blocks from the new arena like I do with Giants and Sharks games (you're allowed to drink on Caltrain so its always a shit show).

The Bay Area is a top 5 metropolitan market and has only one basketball team. Yes, SF is full of fake ass hipsters and yuppies, but it will also take advantage of getting the most of this market. Die hard Giants fans will always look back fondly at the Stick but I don't think any of them regret the team getting a sexy new ballpark in a great location even despite the hoards of undesirable (for lack of a better word) fans that it has brought. I think the same may be true of the Warriors. Obviously we're talking about moving from one city to another, but they've never been the Oakland Warriors. They're a Bay Area wide team and they're moving to SF. It sucks if you live in Oakland that the team will be further away but is it really grounds to give up? I know a lot of Oakland-ers despise SF but they've been sharing the team with them whether they know it or not since they moved there.

Besides they were the SF Warriors first! lol
