OT: Is Steph Curry Turning Into One of the Greats?

While the league didn't emphasize 3pt shooting in his era, Kevin Johnson seems like a pretty good comparison for Curry. High scorer with big assist numbers and great ball handling skills.

KJ never won a championship, but did make the finals to get beaten by the dynasty Bulls. I think Curry's team would lose against those Bulls, too.

If he can sustain what he's doing, then absolutely. He's been healthy for a while now, so he's eliminated some doubts. He's really fantastic.

However, as a Blazer fan I have to point out that, regardless of how good at basketball he is, he's really a weak, girly man!!

Curry came out of college being a good shooter. I never compare players what I compare players to how they make there teams better. Dame and Curry make there team better but for now Curry has better players around him. Do to they been playing together longer then the Blazer been together.

Curry is going to.

Why is this even a discussion?

Only injuries will keep Curry from being one of the alltime greats. Early on it seemed inevitable that he would keep getting hurt. But now not so much. He does a good job of evading contact, even when he drives to the basket he pulls up before getting hammered.
How many more years does he need to be considered one of the all time greats? Another 3-5

If they go back to back this year and then make it to the finals the next year, I say that would be the time to crown him, IMO.

The thing that makes Curry historic is his ability to get his shot off quick. There have been other 3 point shooters that have shot higher percentages, there are PG's that have had the same passing skills, there have been other players that can score similarly in the lane.

We've never seen a shooter able to get his shot off so quick. The defense can't give him a sliver of space or its an open three and he can get 10 of those attempts per game. Other great 3 point shooters, even Ray Allen or Reggie Miller, needed much more room and time to shoot. A defense could usually take them out of the game and force the rest of the team to go 4 on 4.

Combine that with Draymonds rare ability to play PF/C with guard skills; plus a deep roster? Its a rare era of basketball.

Really? Ray Allen always struck me as having an insanely quick release. Reggie would just use a ton of screens to get a shot off.

Curry is much quicker. Although I do wonder if you put a prime Ray Allen in a modern NBA 3 point happy team what would it look like? Say the Rockets that jack up 35 attempts per game. Then build the entire team around him shooting 10+ 3's a game.

Steph is .33 seconds Ray Allen is .73

I think this goes back to the info that Vanilla linked yesterday. A one motion shot versus a two motion shot. I don't even fully understand the difference.

I think the two motion shot, the ball goes back towards the shooter before it goes away from the shooter. It takes longer to shoot. In a one motion shot, the ball is always going up or towards the basket. I think quarterbacks have similar mechanical type issues. In a game where you need to make quick decisions, wasted motion is not as good as one motion.

Also, I am very curious how many points the W's put on the Lakers tonight.

I agree that his quick release is part of what makes him great, but it still comes down to one thing......he makes tough shots from long distances. There may be other plasyers who have a better shooting percentage from 3 pt range. but Steph's 3 pt shots often have a tremendous amount of difficulty and they still go in. It's not like he is the 2nd or third option and is camped out by himself in the corner. He is being doubled from 25-28 feet and still gets it off.....and in.

His size is also part of the intrigue. When Dirk does it we are still amazed and impressed, but we contribute part of it to his height and being able to just shoot over his opponents. Steph gets a little of the underdog love because he looks so small. Forget he can deadlift 400/lbs, he is called the Baby-Faced Assassin for a reason.

Curry can lift 400 lbs???

Deadlift; not bench. Thats a solid amount but nothing insane for his size.

i dunno if this makes me a fuck or not, but im rooting for the Lakers today.

I'm using my Get-Out-Of-Jail card on this btw.

I just dont wanna hear about all the impending Bulls comparisons.... plus it'd be for the lolz.

Well I enjoy the Lakers misery so much. I actually like this Warriors team but can understand how other may not.

But I'd definitely suggest any basketball fans watch as many Warriors games as they can this year. Its a chance to watch a historic team. I wish I watched more of Jordan back in the day instead of just passionately rooting for him to lose.

ESPN has Curry as 4th on the top 10 all time PGs already.

Listen, Curry is amazing! The guy is very dang good (understatement of the century perhaps) BUT I don't think I would put him that high already. I know he can score at will and has certainly improved at assisting others but I just think some of the PGs from the history of the league were more pure playmakers in terms of getting the ball to finishers.

Someones gotta be able to stop him, until then, I cant say that he's not. This is one of the all time great runs for a team and a player if this continues for the next 3 seasons like it could, he HAS to be.

Agreed. I prize play-making over scoring from my PGs. That said, Curry is amazing. He's like a hybrid of Steve Nash and Reggie Miller.

Steph Curry is easily one of the greatest if not greatest PGs in the last 30 years we've ever seen.. EASILY

Actually he is the greatest PG we've seen in the last 30 years

Not counting his injury year (2011-2012) his assists have gone up each year except for last year (and they still won the 'ship)

from 09-10

5.9
5.8
5.3 (26 games)
6.9
8.5
7.7
6.5 (This year, through 36 games)

So I think he's doing a fine job of both, IMO.

Curry over Zeke is a joke! Zeke led the Pistons to Back-To-Back titles in an era when he had to go up against the Showtime Lakers, Bird's Celtics, and Jordan's Bulls ... the path the Warriors went through last year to get their ring was, well, not a gauntlet to say the least.

Curry needs 2-3 more seasons like this before we start ranking him that highly among the All-Time greats.

Side note: John Stockton might be one of the most overrated players in NBA history. Malone carried that Jazz team, especially when they made the finals in 97 and 98. I'll always remember Porter besting him big time during the 91 and 92 playoffs.

Step Curry is so great you have to ask copyright permission to praise him.

Stepg Curry is so great that the atomic movement of his crossover confounds the rules of modern physics.

Steph Curry is so great his cosmic aura can outshine the Northern Lights.

.... no but seriously, he's pretty great.
