OT ish - Blair looking like a top 5 pick.

Blair was a considered a top 5 guy until they found out about his high school injuries.
there was no point in time in which blair was considered a top 5 guy. he was potentially a late lottery guy who seemed a lock for at least the late teens until the questions came up about his knees.

I still haven't came up with one. Can anyone help me out here?

Just off the top of my head.

06 - nobody.

07 - we had the #1 pick, so unless Oden really is Sam Bowie reborn, that was a bit of a no-brainer. I will give the Thunder credit for landing both Durant and Green. If Oden does crash and burn, they would be the obvious candidate for best draft.

08 - the jury is still out.

09 - Warkentien stole Lawson. Petrie made an astute choice in Casspi (and for the record, I brought his name up *before* the draft). The jury is still out on the TWolves/Rubio.

This is all off the top, maybe more research later--

Presti's done a pretty damn good job not only with his picks, but also for making shrewd trades to stockpile them.

Aside from missing on Quincy Douby in 2006, Petrie's gotten Hawes, Thompson, Casspi, Evans (I want to throw in Brockman, but won't :)). That's decent.

Clips with Gordon, Thornton, DeAndre Jordan, Griffin.

There might be others. I just started on the west coast.

Actually San Antonio has a very good record of picking up the talent that slides in the draft. That seems to be their specialty, and when you are a successful team for a long time, that is the only way you stay that way.

2009 37th Blair
2008 26th George Hill
2007 27th Tiago Splitter (not over here yet)
2003 28th Leandro Barbosa
2002 26th John Salmons, 55th Luis Scola.
2001 28th Tony Parker
1999 57th Manu Ginobili

Most of those guys don't have any character issues. So I would assume San Antonio has done their homework.

I don't think it's reasonable to count Salmons and Barbosa. They may have technically been drafted San Antonio, but since they were traded immediately it seems pretty apparent that they were selecting them for Philadelphia and Phoenix respectively.

Patterson was the one making the final calls in 2006, as I understand it. The only years where he's been unquestionably in charge are 2007, 2008 and 2009.

Do you think he's done an amazing job with those based on what you've seen so far?

I understand Patterson was making the "final call" but I recall KP getting much of the credit for the draft that year.

In evaluating the GM's in the 06, 07, and 08 drafts, I still have yet to come up with someone who has done a better job. It appears nobody else has been able to come up with one either. I'm sure there is one, but even being 2nd out of 30 is pretty good.

If you would like me to find a flaw in anyone in our organization from Brandon Roy to Nate, and from Paul Allen to KP, I could do it.

That's a good list. Of course, I said there is no way to evaluate the '09 draft one game into the season, so I have to throw those names out.

Presti has done a very nice job, he would be high on my list as well. Certainly in the top tier along with Buford and KP.

I do not think Sacramento or the Clippers have done that well from 06-08, but that's just my opinion.

From the looks of it, nobody has said GM "x" has been better than KP in those three drafts. If he was just "average" you would think it would be able to come up with a handful of names off the tip of the tongue.

While it is interesting to see if he's been the best over this period, I don't find it very applicable in THIS case. Many many many of us here wanted Blair in the second round, and so far everything (including Blair's play and Pendergraph's lack thereof) has demonstrated us to be correct.

If you're using his general success as an indicator that he was right and we were wrong about Blair, then I don't think you're making a very good point.

If you're just saying that he doesn't suck because of one potentially bad pick, then I don't know how much it adds because I don't think (m)any people think he sucks due to Blair.

It looked at the time like he made a mistake and it looks right now like he did, too. I'm not saying fire the guy but I'm not going to ignore mistakes merely because he's a good GM.

Some days my friend, you are a breath of fresh air!

...he might have had a solid game, but he is definitely not worth dropping A.Jamison in a fantasy league for [like somebody did in mine...good thing I am first on the waiver priority so I can drop my last round pick for a top 3 pick...we even have an IR roster spot so I won't even have to worry about the injury]!!! :ghoti:

I'm saying KP doesn't suck, because his resume says he doesn't suck. I would agree it looks like he didn't take the very best player at the 22nd pick, but since we don't know yet, I'm not ready to say he's failed in selecting Claver.

I get the impression anytime KP doesn't end up with the best possible player at a given pick, he is a failure. To me, that is an unrealistic bar to set in order to measure someones success.

I understand you don't want to ignore a possible mistake (that still is years away from being determined), but I don't notice you chiming in over and over when Roy goes 3-14 or doesn't make solid post entry passes. It appears to me that many people want to blame the people off the court and bury their head when it comes to people like Roy, LMA, and Oden.

Blair will be an All-Star this year. Watching Tyrus Thomas dunk on his face tells me this.
