How will this affect the Nets? The Pacers now have the 11th and 17th selections.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>After on-and-off again negotiations, the Indiana Pacers have agreed in principle to send six-time All-Star Jermaine O’Neal to the Toronto Raptors for point guard T.J. Ford and the 17th pick in Thursday’s NBA draft, a league executive said Wednesday.

After nearly completing the deal earlier in the week, Pacers and Raptors officials needed to exchange more medical information on O’Neal’s left knee and Ford’s neck before finding a comfort level with the trade. It is believed both sides now are comfortable making the deal, though the trade won’t be complete until both O’Neal and Ford pass their physicals.

Toronto also will send Rasho Nesterovic and another role player to match up with O’Neal’s salary. O’Neal is owed $44 million over the next two seasons. He played just 42 games for Indiana a year ago with a left knee injury. O’Neal has expressed a desire to leave the Pacers for a contender.

Ford, who has a history of neck injuries, became expendable when Toronto GM Bryan Colangelo decided that he wanted to make Jose Calderon the franchise’s future at point guard.

Ford was diagnosed with spinal stenosis, a condition that narrows the openings the spinal cord runs through. He missed the 2004-05 season with the Bucks following neck surgery, and missed 13 games with a neck injury last season after Atlanta’s Al Horford leveled him on a breakaway layup. Ford has $25 million and two years left on his contract. Indiana had been searching for a point guard and Ford takes the job now.

Calderon is a restricted free agent, and Colangelo has insisted that he’ll match any offer for him. Clearly, the Raptors will belong to him now.

The Pacers would now hold the 11th and 17th picks in the draft.</div>

Bryan Colangelo just went down a couple of notches in my book.

There is no way O'Neal stays healthy for a full season and if he does, he isn't the old O'Neal that attacked the paint.

Well, their needs are now at Big man and PG, so that probably won't affect us too much...IMO we don't really NEED a PG, and there's plenty of big men in the draft.

As for O'Neal, doesn't matter. He's nothing to get worked up about.

something tells me BC aint done

also BC needed to take a big risk and geting a guy who needs a change in scenery and has proven to be a good player is a risk i can live with
now
bring over Ukic and PG's are okay

I wouldn't want Ford's contract, but I suppose this is the best the Pacers could do.

Maybe they can get the Knicks to take him.

The last 4 years Jermaine has missed an average of 30 games per season. He makes an average of 22 mill the next 2 years.

A big worry for Jermaine other than injury woes. Is he has only shot 44% for a big man the last 2 years. And even last year his 13.6 ppg is pretty weak. His career average of 46% FG% for a big man is average I guess.

How stupid does Colangelo look in this deal. My opinion, a great deal of stupid. I cant believe he even included a first round pick in that deal. That is what makes it worse. I'm fairly positive they could have done better for Ford with NY. Not a good deal for Toronto.

O'Neal played just 28 MPG last season, so his PPG and other per game stats are going to look weak-ish.

He's one season removed from 19.4 PPG/9.6 RPG (though he shot 44%)

good- now we don't have to hear the O'Neal to NJ rumors anymore (not that we've heard them recently)
While I think Bosh/O'Neal could be pretty cool, I don't see Jermaine being the player that he once was, of course. Who knows, this may hurt Toronto more than help them.
So Indy has another 1st round pick..hm..

I don't know if I'd want a big man that tries to score 20 ppg and shoots 44% on my team lol.

OMG.... well this deal can go both ways... what if oneal comes into this seaon and produces his 20ppg and his 9rpg ? doesnt it make toronto better than what they were? one thing is for sure they get a guy who (if healthy) can be a banger instead of being a bosh whos a 6'10" jump shooter

He was pretty much all Indy had, so that was against a lot of triple teams.

He's a career 46% shooter and plays well in the post or from mid-range. I think he plays more mid-range than most PFs so he doesn't get as many offensive rebounds and dunks.

Are you being sarcastic? O'neal a banger? He is one of the softest big men in the game. He's been shooting jumpers for the longest time. You'll be lucky to see him spend any time in the post. He'll probably be like Ewing circa 2000

You never know. O'Neal has taken the last 2 seasons off (basically) to heal his knees. If he can put the bulk of those problems behind him, he can be the dark horse next season.

Although pairing him with Bosh, a similar player is... ahem.

Rasho sucks, Ford has a big contract and Toronto has a better option anyway, and the 17th pick isn't going to help the team as much as O'Neal. O'Neal may well benefit from a change of scenery, and does complement Bosh nicely if he's willing to play in the post like he can.

I don't see how Toronto did anything but get a lot better with this deal. The worst case is they have a huge expiring deal after the season.

Indiana has been looking for a PG for like forever. I think Mark Jackson or Jalen Rose was their last actually good one. Ford's tiny, but at his best is exactly what Indy wants. Oddly, he's been on 3 teams in the last 4 years now.

What the hell? I made a topic about this on the Nets board and some moderator moved it to the Raptors board saying it belongs there. Whatever...

This looks like the Nets forum to me.

This was a great trade for Toronto. Now Calderon will progress as being the team's only pg, and they have probably the best Pf/C combo in the east and maybe the NBA.

Hopefully the dynamic of sharing a front court with Bosh will mean good things for O'Neal and for the Raptors.

Toronto could run a scary double-sided pick and roll with Kapono and O'Neal on one side and Bosh and Parker on the other. Two inside-outside scorers and two deadly three point shooters.

This looks good on paper but really, how much damage is O'Neal, Bosh and Bargs going to do in the post?

Brian looks to be getting antsy as the people of Toronto weren't to happy about them last season.

Great trade for Toronto if Jermaine plays 70 games goes for 16-10 a night. Indy's needs go from PG to bigs. Looks like Augustin drops in to the Kings laps....unless Portland is targeting a move up to snag Augustin. Indy will probably go with a big and an athletic wing.

this makes me upset. i wish rod thorn would make a move like this. teams like TO and Portland are making great trades IMO and I feel that NJ is playing the waiting game....now you could say they are waiting for the right move, but Im just venting...I wish my favorite team would spice things up..and want to win now...I feel like they are rebuilding for 4 years when I want to win now :/

i wasnt being sarcastic... oneal still plays the game with his back to the basket

so toronto now have 2 o'neals or 2 boshes...

i think this is a good move for toronto though...jo's contract only runs 2 more years and ends just in time for bosh's FA year and a deep FA market in 2010. they also gave up players they don't need and a future role player at best with that 17th pick...

Ah, yes, that's right. That was always "worst case scenario" for if he got traded to the Nets - of course, it applies to Toronto, too.

i completely agree with you maximillion... i don't know why we aren't making big time moves even if its a risk. They keep saying we want to contend and things like that... but we're always so passive and instead make small changes. This has been going on ever since the Vince Carter trade. I think Thorn just likes to try and rip people off and not take risks.

If jermaine oneal IS healthy as they say he is... they can have a really solid team. two potential 20-10 guys is no joke.

We need to get Brand nowwwww... whatever it takes and build around him and harris.

This was a GOOD trade IMO. I know many people say that O'Neil isnt the same but honestly look what we gave up....TJ Ford who has been overshadowed by Calderon (imagine Calderon's stats now that hes the fulltime PG) and Rasho who barely got minutes in the playoffs and a 17th, there really isnt any ONE player that I would take at 17th that would change the team drastically.

I dont mind this trade at all, it has the POTENTIAL to put the Raptors atop of the conference battling Boston as Detriot wants to give their team a facelift. If O'Neil doesnt pan out we are as mediocre as we were last season with Bosh and Calderon running the show.

i agree its basically JO for ur 17th pick...

and JO > ford, nestro and 17th pick... thing is the salary... if JO doesnt pan out. but hey at least you guys are tryin to get better... our GM and pres biggest move oh wait.... is news paper and radio interviews bout what they are goin to do on draft nite... great!

hey at least we still have harris? and vc?
