What's sad is that I had to read this thread to turn my fucking head away from my computer and look out the window to see it was snowing.

Damnit! I'm coming to Portland for a week on Friday and planned on bringing my summer clothing. Frik this.

It's actually accumulating on the grass in Waterfront Park...

..where I am laying with my bottle of malt liquor and my laptop.

How much snow do you guys usually get in a winter?

Some winters we don't get any. Most are just a inch or so. So it's a big deal to us when it snows.

Weird. I figured you guys would have similar winters to mine in RI, since we're both about the same distance from the equator and both right on the coast.

Last year around this time we had over a foot of snow and the city pretty much shut down for a few days. We don't salt the roads so I'm sure you can imagine what the roads would be like.

Hmmm ... I guess it probably snows about 3 or 4 times a year with anywhere from 4 to 15 total inches of accumulation.

That is to say, schools around here shut down with a half an inch on the ground and everybody turns into a panicked asshole with even a hint of snow on the road -- especially all the Californian transplant douche bags.

Eastern edges of continents get much harsher winters than western edges of continents.

I like to call them the unwashed masses.

Yes, I have noticed that the more snow a place usually gets, the better they are at clearing the roads. We got about 2 feet last week, and everything was only shut down for a few hours. When I go to Maine, they can get a foot and people just go about their business like everything is normal. I was in Washington DC one winter, they got 3 or 4 inches and it was like the world had ended.

This necessitates mandatory posting of this video.

Snowing in Northeast. Accumulating, too. Of course, the weather forecast in today's paper was "high of 40 degrees, showers late." Typical level of accuracy.

maybe an inch in the valley

Yeah, it varies a lot depending on how high you are.

If you are really high, you may perceive snow that others can't. They may laugh at you.

A lot over here on the Alameda ridge in N.E. Man I love snow!

Hippie:pimp:

Do people in Portland run to the grocery store and buy everything in sight every time the weather calls for snow?

I was out around noon today; there was a lot more of that cold Gorge air than expected, for sure. F'ing cold walking from Cup & Saucer back to my house. It was definitely colder than 37 out there!

By the time there's snow on the ground, it's too late... you could kill yourself out there! Usually in Southeast we get our snow shoes and walk to a bar.

Multiply that by 19 and you get last winter's snowfall. It can get a little crazy some years. Well, crazy for Portland standards.

Most of the crazy is supplied by those asshats in Subarus who think they can go anywhere!
