OT: Iverson Bails on Grizzlies

He really can't handle not being "the star." From what I can tell, his self-image hasn't changed, even though his productivity has declined to role-player status. He still views himself as a franchise player, so he can't understand or take being asked to accept a backseat role. He will probably always see himself as a superstar, which means he'll never fit in on a team.
 
I can't understand how after no team would even look at him, he decides to split on the Grizzlies. He is averaging 12pts, 4ast, on 57% shooting in 22 minutes a game, not bad for a bench player.

Like what similarities? Miller left his team for Atlanta? First I heard. Your pure speculation stated as fact is silly.

Seriously, the only reason it took this long was because he was injured. Iverson caused nothing but problems in Detroit last year. How did Chris Wallace think he wouldn't be a problem in Memphis? Did he think Iverson would accept a role coming off the bench behind Mayo and Conley? Did he think Hollins would bench Mayo or Conley in favor of Iverson. I guess the real question is: what the HELL was he thinking? Dumbest GM in the league - by far. The Grizzlies are the new Clippers - lots of lottery picks that will leave as soon as they can, a tight ass owner who won't pay to keep them, and a GM that doesn't have a clue.

Memphis board has multiple threads going. i guess Iverson doesn't want to be the key on the rebuilding process as noted in link. I personally think he wants to be on a championship francise and nobody is wiling to pay his high salary demands. Well, sucks for him. Selfish bastard.

AI is having a mid life crisis it appears. He cannot deal with the fact he is getting old. Nobody wants him on their team that is in contention, because he would fuck it up. It's that simple. There is no TEAM in AI.

I don't. He voluntarily took their money and signed a contract. Three games in and he's already reneged on his commitment. If he didn't know Memphis was a shit hole, if he didn't know they weren't a championship contender, or if he thought adding him would make them one, it's his own damn fault or being stupid.

Ironically, if he was willing to swallow his enormous ego and accept the role the coach wants him to play, he'd actually be pretty good at it. At this point in his career, a 6th man instant offense off the bench role is about the best he can hope for and really the only way he can help a team win. But, helping the team is not what AI is about. It's always about what he wants, not what's best for the team.

He was stupid for signing the contract. Memphis was stupid for thinking they could change him.

This is just too perfect of an ending to a career that has been defined by selfishness and greed.

Sure, he may have played with heart and he was tough, but he has no idea where he is right now in his career and what his role should be. He's lucky to have even gotten an offer from Memphis. However, Memphis is one of the worst run franchises in terms of talent evaluation and overall management.

That's my biggest issue with him and the Stephen Jackson fiasco...signing a contract KNOWING that you're not going to live up to your end...it's BS and I hope somehow AI gets jettisoned without being paid.

...but if it had to happen somewhere, Memphis is the appropriate place!

Dumb player, dumb GM - a match made in hell (aka Memphis).

Looks like a sequel to Dumb & Dumber - maybe Dumb & Dumbest starring Chris Wallace and Allen Iverson.
 
The only sad part was not getting to see a lineup of AI, Mayo, Gay and Zach play together and have to 'share' the ball. That would've been one thing of beauty to see that try to work out.
