OT: Josh Smith Released by Pistons

Hard to say. The guy just turned 29, so it's not like he's old, but man he has sucked royally this season and last in Detroit. Is that a bad fit, or has he really declined that much? His shooting percentages are abysmal. Can you really blame such poor shooting on being a bad fit? It's not like he was ever a great shooter, but now he flat out sucks.

And, the guy consistently takes some of the dumbest shots I've ever seen. I was watching the end of the DET- BRK game last night and knew there was no way DET was going to win with Smith on the floor. Here's just one example:

1:50.0 J. Smith misses 3-pt shot from 27 ft

The guy, with a career .278 - 3FG%, decided to jack up a 27-footer with 8 seconds left on the shot clock. It wasn't a desperation heave to beat the shot clock. They had plenty of time and plenty of other options, but Smith asessed the situation and decided it was in his team's best interest that he hoist a 27-footer in that situation. The look on Stan Van Gundy's face was classic. I think they had to release Smith for health reasons - Van Gundy's health.

Well, at least if he goes to Houston, they'll have two horrendous FT shooters to intentionally foul in hte 4th quarter of close games.

They played him out of position at SF and his numbers took a dive.

It's hard to say he'd rebound to previous form if given full time minutes at PF again.

He used to jack up ill advised 3 pointers in Atlanta, too.

Rockets weighing their options:

ESPNSteinLine Marc Stein
Rockets, I'm told, are in fact-finding mode and weighing whether to make a Josh Smith run. Too early to say if they're in or out

Clips doing digging as well. It would be a risk but then again, sometimes it's 'go big or go home.' Dave from BlazersEdge says there is always room for one 'crazy' guy if you have veteran leadership. Rodman, Captain Jack....there have been a number of teams that won titles with a guy on their roster with a screw loose. It all depends on if you have the coach and the leadership to get him in line and get production from obvious talent.

Yeah I would love him to make some easy shots in the first half. It usually coaches him to take ill advised shots all game

Because he's playing on one of the worst teams in the league. He was really good in Atlanta.

Dude. The number one reason Detroit sucked was because of Smith. He's been in the league 10 years and can't shoot. He's obviously past his prime. Do you really think Houston would benefit by ANOTHER God-awful FT shooter on their team? I wouldn't want him anywhere near our team. You yourself thought the Pistons had the talent to be good last year. Turns out they didn't because their "#1" option sucks.

And this forum would erupt when teams send Smith to the line. I mean they went bat shit crazy when T-rob was missing against Milwaukee

He is the same player Crash was when he played for us, I can't say I wouldn't be stoked to have that coming in off the bench

Vet minimum. I don't care if he has sucked. If he would sign for the vet minimum I would do it.

Very easy to dismiss castaways, but guys like Diaw, Zbo, Monta, Stephen Jackson all found the right fits and the rhetoric about them changed. We all wanted the Hawks' Smoove. Lets not forget that. What if Detroit was just a bad fit?

And he doesn't have character issues
Those guys weren't the worst shooter in the history of the league.

Yup. Give him a bench energy role with him getting a lot of cuts to the basket (absolutely no ISO) and if it doesn't work out, oh well... Cut him.

But why would he settle for that when there's half a dozen other teams that will offer him a starting role?

He considers himself a starter. He would destroy our team. Let Houston, Dallas, and LAC be desperate. We have the second best record in the NBA and are getting great production from our PFs.

We already have TRob to do that and he has chemistry with our team, knows his role, and knows the system.

Okay I know this is entirely hypothetical, but use realism here. Josh Smith won't come to Portland, even if Portland wanted him. He can't play SF and barely plays PF. Those are his only 2 positions, so Aldridge and Batum would only give him a max of like 10-15 minutes per game. Houston, Miami, and Sacramento will let him start. Houston has the most money to throw at him. It should be a pretty easy decision for him. Houston is the #1 front runner, then Sacramento and Miami

At this point he can't do anything that TRob can't do and we don't even play Thomas the Train much.

But why would he settle for that when there's half a dozen other teams that will offer him a starting role?

Nobody said we would be his first choice. He's probably going to Houston. But we can offer.

We should sign Smith for the vet min and then trade LMA. I'm not sure who we'd trade him for but we wouldn't need him.

His value has never been higher. Do it now!

They played him out of position at SF and his numbers took a dive.

That was last season. He's back to playing his preferred PF this season, and his numbers are even worse. DET benched Monroe so they could start Smith at PF. No wonder Monroe wants out. Go to 82games.com and compare their advanced stats. Based on production, there is no way Smith deserves to start in front of Monroe and play more minutes at PF. I don't blame Monroe, I wouldn't want to play for an organization that made those kind of stupid decisions.

It's hard to say he'd rebound to previous form if given full time minutes at PF again.

That's exactly what DET has given him, and he sucks worse this year than last.

He used to jack up ill advised 3 pointers in Atlanta, too.

Insanely stupid shot selection has ALWAYS been a JSmoove trademark.

I'm guessing we'd be no better than his 10th choice.

"We want you come come here, where it's cold and rainy, play fewer minutes and shoot less. Sound good?"

Isn't exactly a good sales pitch.

Once you get past Houston and Miami, where it's warm and sunny and he'd start at PF, you still have DAL, LAC, PHO, and maybe even a return to ATL, the site of his former glory, all way ahead of POR in the JSmoove sweepstakes.

Kind of makes you wonder if Pop would take a chance on him. Pop is the coach most likely to get the most out of Smith, and if Smith didn't come around, Pop wouldn't be afraid to cut him loose, like he did with Capn Jack. Plus, SAS already has Timmie and Diaw. It's not like they are hurting at the PF spot.

I would put money on him signing with Houston. Makes too much sense.
