OT - KGW vs Direct TV

The parent company of our news partner KGW NewsChannel 8 is in a contract dispute with Direct TV. That means on November 1st, if there is no agreement, the station will go off the air for Direct TV customers. KGW President and General Manager DJ Wilson says the issue is over retransmission fees. Direct TV must pay KGW for taking it's programming and re-airing it. The two sides can't agree on that fee. Wilson says they are negotiating in good faith and hope to have the issue resolved before the deadline. 17% of KGW viewers have Direct TV.

This could be bad news once the NBA situation is worked out. Direct TV subscribers would miss out on both the KGW and CSN Trail Blazer games... only able to watch the national TV games.

Posturing. NewsCorp and their sports' networks can't afford to miss out on the 20 million households, plus countless sports' bars, who subscribe to DirecTV. This could be Dish or even Comcast, too, within the next year. The only reason it's DirecTV at this point is because their contract is up and NewsCorp is playing hardball.

I was in Bend a few years ago for New Year's Eve, and the local Fox affiliate went off of the Comcast cable there at 12:01am on 1/1. It took about 3 days to rectify the situation, but I know at least one weekend of NFL games was missed.

It's not NBC. I believe it's Belo. Belo owns several stations around the country. Here in Houston it is the CBS affiliate that they own. No deal was reached with them as of last night, but both parties continue to believe something will get done by midnight tonight.

On a happier note, Directv did reach an agreement with Fox on their programming, such as FX and the regional sports channels. As well as extending the parent FOX broadcasting several more years.

KGW uses Newscorp as their news service. Belo is the stakeholder, but basically runs parallel with Newscorp on this issue as they are separate contracts. The misleading part is that the KGW/Newscorp contract runs through 12/31. I'm not sure if yesterday's agreement covers this issue, but it can't hurt.

not for me. Unless DirecTV, Dish, Charter, etc etc are all playing the exact same form of hardball.
