LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - As if a sixth defeat on the bounce was not bad enough, the injury-hit Los Angeles Lakers faced further gloom on Friday with the news that back-up forward Jordan Hill will likely miss the rest of the season.

I'm happy to see the Lakers losing, and happy that they've lost their best backup player for the year, but what the hell is a "sixth defeat on the bounce"? Is this some new expression I've never heard of?

...Ken Greenwald says,

ON THE BOUNCE has several meanings, some of which are obvious (as something rebounds/bounces – ball, stock price, etc.) and some which are not, with one of the ‘not’ group being the answer to your question.

ON THE BOUNCE is defined in the Oxford Dictionary of Idioms, which, incidentally, is only one of two sources in which I found it listed, and the only one which has the meaning you are interested in. It is surprising that an expression which has been so widely used – I found droves of examples – has appeared in so few slang and idiom dictionaries. But I suppose that that can be chalked up to the fact that it has only been in use for a little over a decade, and not at all in the U.S.:

ON THE BOUNCE informal [[U.K. and Commonwealth]]: In quick succession (Oxford Dictionary of Idioms)

The best news is they don't have their draft pick. If they lose Dwight Howard I will laugh and laugh and laugh and laugh.

"On the bounce" connotes something temporary, and implies that the King is taking a nap or a leak and shall rise again soon, just like the South, for which we're still waiting for another secession.

Sitting on the edges of their seats, Laker fans do not have a 150-year attention span. They expect an overnight 180 degree turnaround any day now.
