On the radio before the game, they were already apologizing for a slow start and for not even winning it all this year, that making it to the Finals would be fine. It took the Heat two years, etc. But Nash is 38! He needs to win now.

These guys are gonna be fun to watch crumble. We'll win tomorrow. Lillard will destroy Nash. What a nice and easy player to make your NBA debut against: a 38 year old terrible defender who is not being used correctly by his coach!

Go Blazers!!

I thought this was a pretty insightful post:

Why does everyone blame Mike Brown for this? In PHX, Nash had players that could shoot from deep and run the floor. That's what enabled him to "be Nash"--push the ball up the floor, and spread out the D so he could have room to penetrate and dish.

This team doesn't run and it doesn't shoot from deep. This isn't Brown's coaching. It's the personnel of the team.

To all of you sarcastically asking "did we sign Nash just to bring the ball up to half court and camp out on the 3-point line".... um, yeah. We kind of did.

Whether this team figures out the Princeton and makes it work for them is yet to be seen. But if it doesn't, this isn't on Brown. It's on the front office that signed a 7 Seconds or Less pg, paired him with guys who don't run and like to play in the post, and have them coached by a defensive-minded coach (coaching a defense of aging players with little athleticism in a league that is becoming increasingly more athletic). This is all on the front office.

It's a pretty valid point. Nash is the only starter who is a scary three point shooter. Kobe can hit a clutch three here or there, but it's not his livelihood. In the past three years he's been hitting them at 32%.

So Nash is basically playing the Derek Fisher role, but without Fisher's at least adequate defense.

Still, though, the Lakers just have so much size. They are going to out-rebound everybody. If they can build on the idea that Gasol runs the offense in the half court, focused primarily on getting Howard or Kobe the ball at the end of the play, it's going to still be a scary team.

It was kind of weird to see the boxscore from the first game and Blake with more assists than Nash.

Keep in mind, too, that Nash went 1-4 from three tonight. None of the shots he missed were all that hard for him. If they all go in there's no meltdown.

Still, though, there's quite a stunning contrast between the two teams who were "supposed" to win tonight (Heat and Lakers). The Heat blow out their biggest potential EC rival on the night of the ring ceremony (always a tough out for the champion). The Lakers lose at home to a Mavs team playing without Kamen and Dirk. Pretty remarkable.

On the radio in Portland today (1080 fan), the Lakers radio analyst claimed three Blazers would start for LA if they were on the Team; Lillard; Batum; LMA; now he did admit to having a man crush on Lillard. Claimed Dame was the next D.Will and was shocked he slipped to us.

Also said the Clippers royally fucked up by letting Oshley go and went on to say Neil had a masterful draft. Now maybe he was just being nice, but it was great to hear that from a man of the purple and piss.

Go Blazers

.

Great point. If Nash shoots 100% from the three point line, they should compete.

You after tonight's Laker loss.

Night Homer. Have fun on your Canadian vacation.

Good night Sly, and good luck getting the Ducks to change their colors to yellow and purple.

It's funny because now we're seeing EXACTLY what we would have seen from Nash if he had been plugged into Nate McMillan's offense. I know for a fact that some of us were saying these exact same things. That Nash likes to run, that he needs the ball in his hands, and that the SSOL offense made him look like a fucking HOFer. If you go back to when Nash was in Dallas, he was a good player, but he wasn't a HOF quality point guard. Not even close. The kind of offense that Dallas ran was much more similar to what he's now playing in LA. Very half-court oriented, with Dirk running the pick and roll with Nash quite a bit. I don't think the Lakers will get anywhere close to the kind of numbers from Nash that he was putting up in Phoenix. They basically got a better version of Steve Blake.

They basically got a better version of Steve Blake.

In running with your analogy, they got a Hall of Fame version of Steve Blake...and since a LOT in here thought you could win w/Steve Blake as your PG passing to Roy, Oden and LMA, then I don't see how it's horrible if he's instead doing it to K*be, D-Ho and Gasol.

They basically just took our 54-win 2008-09 season, and aside from Roy and K*be, upgraded to a much better (HoF'er?) player at every position. Their issue is much more Mike Brown, as our issue was very much Nate McMillan. If they just dumbed it down and ran K*be isos and Pau pick and pops and out of the high post with Howard in the cleanup role and Nash shooting 50/40/90, then they'd be dominant b/c of talent. As it is, they have the Jamaal Magloire Memorial Former Coach of the Year Defensive Genius Mike Brown trying to implement a motion offense.

I bet game 2 will be much smoother for the lakers. I hope the team, players and fans are prepared for a battle.

They didn't get a hall of fame version of Steve Blake because Steve Nash wouldn't be going to the hall if he'd played in a Nate McMillan type of offense.

Point guards like Nash need the ball in their hands. Blake was never a point guard. He was a shooting guard in that spot so that Roy could handle the ball more. So in that regard, this is very similar because Kobe likes to handle the ball as well. And sure, I bet we could have won with Blake if Roy and Oden had never become walking wounded, but that scenario doesn't really compare because the Lakers are all healthy.

The thing is, I think Nash and Howard could be great together. The problem is Kobe. He's a Brandon Roy type of SG, who needs the ball to make plays. He's not a spot-up shooter. It's like they just threw together four stars and told Brown to make it work, but those four stars don't necessarily gel together. Reminds me a lot of when they had Payton, Malone, Kobe, and Shaq.

Don't get cocky. Kobe might sit this one out, and if he does, the team will run much more smoothly.

IMO Lakers have a very good shot to be the "biggest bust" this year, with their aging stars and a lousy suppporting cast and a questionable coach (IMO) they are one key injury away from a potential disaster. And with their payroll would that implosion not be fun to watch!

Poor old Mike Brown. He's going to get Kurt Rambis-ed for this one.

If he had the nads he would put either Kobe or Nash in the second unit. I dunno if Nash would work better with Gasol or Howard. Probably neither, as they're not used to being pick-n-rollers. Odd that Amare should be better than either of them.

Anyway: Nash with Jodie Meeks and Antawn Jamison and a lot of movement might work. If Howard could just be a Tyson Chandler type then you've got a killer second unit. Put Blake and Sacre in the starting unit and just let Gasol and Kobe do their thing.

Somehow, I don't think Brown could get away with suggesting that, though.
