LOS ANGELES -- Clippers swingman Ricky Davis was suspended five games Monday for violating terms of the NBA's drug program.

The suspension will begin Tuesday night when the Clippers face Sacramento. He will be eligible to return Jan. 8 at San Antonio.

Davis, who hasn't played since Nov. 22 because of a sore left knee, is averaging 4.3 points in 13 games in his first season with the Clippers.

The 29-year-old Davis signed as an unrestricted free agent after averaging 13.8 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists in 82 games for the Miami Heat last season. He has also played for Charlotte, Cleveland, Boston and Minnesota.

"We've been informed of the league's action concerning Ricky Davis and we will comply with all terms of the NBA's collective bargaining agreement," Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy said. "Beyond this statement, we will have no further comment on this matter."

Why anyone would want Ricky Davis on their team is beyond comprehension... of course, it's the Clippers that have him.

I may be wrong, but I don't think that they test for that unless the player in question has already had issues (which I'm not aware of RD having). He may blaze up at halftime of every game but it's my guess that it was something else that raised the red flag.

Yeah, I didn't mean that seriously. I was just referring to Ricky calling the Blazers roaches.

His career has really taken a tailspin in terms of his production on the court. There was a time when he was fairly productive.
 
Gotta give the guy credit, if you're going to get suspended, do it when you're injured and not playing anyway.
