OT: Rubio to join Minnesota

Welcome to our community

Be a part of something great, join today!

They just need a white SG and SF and they've got an all-white starting five!

Rudy and Claver for Beasley?

I'll be real surprised if Rubio ever becomes a current top 10 PG in the NBA.

Is Rubio the Freddie Adu of the NBA?
He'll be 21 when the regular season is supposed to start, and his game is regressing as his peers catch up to him physically.

It would be odd. Did Adu generate buzz by dominating his peers, or by looking great against actual grown men? Rubio has done the latter.

That said, Rubio seems to have stalled a little. I think he was at his best playing for DKV Juventut because they played a run'n'gun style. Both the Spanish National Team and Barcelona have structured themselves around Juan Carlos Navarro, a ball-dominant SG who is at his best in a halfcourt game. I think that's part of the problem for Rubio, and probably the reason he's coming over to the NBA despite the lockout. So long as you think of him as "a poor man's Rajon Rondo" I think expectations shouldn't be too high.

Twolves where 10th in the league in scoring, so maybe there is more hope for Rubio than I thought. Although I dont see a team built around Kevin Love ever being a good run'n'gun team. Twolves are dead last in points against, I dont see that improving with Rubio.

Love is actually perfect for that type of team. He is an elite rebounder and an excellent outlet passer. If the fast break isn't there, set it up and go through Love on offense.

That's what I was going to say as I was reading this thread. Flynn doesn't seem to fit on that team, so it certainly can't hurt to bring Rubio over except that they have to pay him.

I think Flynn is going to be a decent PG as well. Maybe just not in the triangle? I'd love to see the Blazers make a deal with Minny invloving Rudy and Flynn. Rubio would like that, and we would get a potentially good PG.

I kind of like that idea; Minnesota might be the only team in the league now from whom we could get any value back for Rudy. Flynn is still only 22 and has only been in the league two years, seems like worth taking a chance on.

agree, seems like a no brainer, certainly worth it to us to give Flynn another chance - especially getting him out of that triangle offense

Also, Flynn had a very good rookie season, was injured and has an awful year this season. Just based upon his first yr he's worth a shot

Ya, Flynn had decent numbers for a rookie when he wasn't in the triangle. Not sure what else we would need to add for Flynn though?

Have you compared Brandon Jennings' numbers from his last year in Italy to his numbers his first year in the NBA?

I thought Jennings bumped heads with coaches and they never gave him any PT. Maybe I'm wrong, I just thought he never got on the court.

Rudy was also considered a great defensive player in Europe, and won DPOY there as well in 2008. Plus, Rudy actually has some international accomplishments, while Rubio was outplayed by Juan Navarro in the 2010 world championships and by Jose Calderon and Navarro in the 2008 Olympics.

Rubio was 17 in the 2008 Olympics. Who cares if he was outplayed by an NBA starting-level PG and another NBA-level guy?

Fernandez was a couple of years older than Rubio when he came over. It's very possible that Ricky has hit his limit, but I think that given his innate abilities and his youth, there's a pretty good chance he becomes at least an NBA starter and perhaps a lot more than that.

I'm not a huge Flynn fan, but he'd make a good backup PG/potential PGotF.

Rudy and our first would seem fair to me, and not a bad deal for MN if they're looking to move Flynn.

I firmly believe that the triangle offense murdered Flynn's development so far.

I'll take what you say about Rubio with a grain of salt. You used to post on BBF how Rubio would be able to PG the Blazers to a title in his rookie season, and if it meant trading LMA for him, it was worth it.

I think some of you guys are underestimating Rubio as a prospect. He's probably the best international PG prospect ever... unless he totally tanks this year or he signs a fugly contract, he'll go top 3 or 4... and even with those things happening I'd bet he goes top 10.

The guy is special and NBA teams know it.

And he was drafted fifth.

Damn I'm good.

Heh

Not sure about him being the best international PG prospect ever, though, but good foresight! There was no way an overhyped PG was getting by David Kahn in that draft, but you didn't know that at the time!

I'm excited, natch, curious to see Rubio come over and play in the NBA next year. Hopefully the lockout is minimal, because between having Rubio and Love on the same team, the T-Wolves could have two guys put up All-Star numbers on a 12-win team. :)

12 wins seems unlikely if Rubio is having an All Star-caliber season, but they still might not make the playoffs. But at least that's a nice core for a good GM (post-Kahn) to build around. :)

So overhyped it makes me sick

Meanwhile, Kyrie "I played 8 games at Duke" Irving being tossed around at #1 is "hyped just right" for you? Or Enes "I didn't play a lick of college ball and came off the bench a few minutes for a Turkish team" Kanter at #2 or #3?

MEM had no business taking Thabeet #2. That should've been Rubio.

Maybe on talent displayed at the time, but I'm sure the risk that Rubio wouldn't come over immediately was priced into his draft stock, which is why he fell. And for good reason, as he didn't come over for a couple of years.

Big difference b/w #2 money and #5 money. IIRC, that was the big factor. He could pay his buyout out of the #2 salary, but it would've been tough with #5.

Memphis had drafted Mike Conley Jr. as their PG in 2007. As ambivalent as I am about Conley's game, I think he'll be a better NBA player than Rubio, because at least Conley Jr. has quick feet, can defend, and can shoot a bit.

Really? Love is maybe the best outlet passing big in the NBA.

So all players that came out of high school are overhyped? If it wasnt for the age limit that was implemented Irving and Kanter probably would have jumped to the league at 18.

my point is that if a guy is "so overhyped it's sick" while playing 5 years in the euroleague, what are the thoughts on the hype-ness of Irving and Kanter, who've played a total of 8 games in the US between them?
