Way back when I grew up, life was tough. For example, the verb "to hang."

The past participle differs for transitive vs. intransitive. When the sentence has an object, it's, "He hung up his guns and retired to Old Smokie." With no direct object, it's, "He was hanged."

Let that be a hardscrabble lesson to you young dilettantes.
