I'd submit that three "kicked" calls were earlier than the 4th quarter, but still...
RENTON, Wash. -- NFL referee Bill Leavy acknowleded he made mistakes in the Seattle Seahawks' 2006 Super Bowl loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The veteran official began an annual rules interpretation session with the Seattle media on Friday by bringing up the subject without being asked.

Leavy says he "kicked two calls in the fourth quarter" and "impacted the game, and as an official you never want to do that."

The veteran official of 15 NFL seasons says the game "left me with a lot of sleepless nights" and that "I'll go to my grave wishing that I'd been better."

This week is the first time since that game that Leavy has been in Seattle with the Seahawks.

Yeah, that game was brutally reffed, and I'm no Seahawks fan.

That fuckin' games will piss me off until the day I die.

Got a link to the article?

I'm not a Seahawk fan, but that was the only Super Bowl game I saw (I've seen all but 2) that was decided by the refs.

I watched it too, and he did it on purpose.

yahoo sports has their writer on this one.

Put simply, the Seahawks didn't play well enough to win Super Bowl XL. They made several crucial mistakes, but it's also correct to say that the Steelers didn't play well enough to win. Officiated correctly, XL probably would have been an ugly war of attrition; a barely-remembered close game that could have gone either way. But because of the calls made, the league's subsequent denial that anything was wrong with those calls, and Leavy's admission of guilt so much later, this game will never go away.
The game score might have been closer but Seattle defense didn't put a stop to Pittsburgs offense either.

Seattle was running up and down the field on the Steelers until every time they got near redzone a flag would be thrown. Refs kill momentum. They called a chopblock on Hasselbeck after he threw a pick :|

Sea Pit

Seattle could have made less big mistakes on both sides of the ball, but it's undeniable they outplayed Pittsburgh and the refs had a hand in the outcome of the game. No doubt at all.

1. Yahoo is wrong. It wasn't an ugly game.
2. My sources tell me Stern was involved.

Stern's desire to fuck over Paul Allen knows no bounds... I wouldn't be terribly shocked if #2 was somehow true. The man is a menace.
