It's hard to believe that in 42 years of owning one of the most successful NBA franchises, Portland still can't get an All-Star game.

I really think it has much less to do with hotels and more to do with the crappy weather in feb and the lack of nightlife options. it's just that saying a "lack of hotels" is an easy cop out.

Facts and Truth is a cop out?

"I don't like to hear about facts, so I will inject my opinion and claim that is the real truth."

there are ways around the hotel issue that have already been addressed. so why is this still an issue? look at where they have the games, good weather cities and places with a lot of nightlife. if you watch the trends it isn't hard to figure out why we don't get an ASW.

There are? What are those?

And addressed to whose satisfaction?

Easily fixed.

Park a couple of cruise ships right next to the Rose Garden. One for the league and players, the other for the press.

It's what Olympic and World Cup cities do when they need extra hotel space.

It would work.

You're damn right it would work. And the lack of hotel space is overblown anyway. It's just an excuse that Stern uses.

We've had junk mayors lately. If one were to publicly propose that Stern would have a hard time saying no.

And you know this how?

In my opinion it WOULDN'T work.

And who are you to say or claim otherwise?

Because we have this thing called a river that is dredged deep enough to handle cruise ships.

Because cruise ships are floating hotels.

Because other cities have and will continue to use cruise ships to supplement hotel needs for large events.

The thing is they don't count the hotels that are in the 'burbs. You would find plenty of space if they did.

What links do you have for me that shows that large cruise ships have docked with large numbers of passengers at the downtown seawall.

My understanding is that:

As cruise ships got larger and larger;

As security requirements became significantly more restrictive;

As the rivers in Portland are not dredged often and deep;

is that the number of ships docking downtown has fallen off, and I am not aware of any dockings of a monster hotel-like cruise ship in recent years.

"The World" ship docked a few years ago. But, it is a relatively small cruise ship. They dock for a long time at each stop, making the hassle of a security plan and fencing and so-on worth it. And, they have very few passengers, solving the embark/disembark problems that plague large cruise ships.

If I am missing something, please educate me.

Why should they?

What is the point?

You might as well say, "They could count the rooms in Eugene", as that would be nearly as useful to the type of event they put on. Proximity is everything.

All good questions,

The World is a 45,000 gross ton cruise ship. Other 45,000 gross ton cruise ships hold 1,200-1,500 people

The grain elevators next to the RG fill 60,000 - 80,000 gross ton grain ships.

A 70,000 gross ton cruise ship holds 2,000 people and 920 crew.

As far as your security concerns go I'm not sure what the problem is, Astoria deals with multiple large cruise ship landings throughout the year and those are for just a few hours. If the Astoria police force can protect Astoria I'm sure the PPD can protect us.

Baloney. There are thousands you could put in the burbs and arrange mass transportation for.

I believe you are misinformed. You are just guessing. Unless you can link me to numerous large ships docking downtown in recent years what is the point of you making stuff uo about how easy you think it is.

I think it is hard and a problem. And besides, like I already said, the NBA doesn't want a ship. It doesn't sit their needs.

Baloney. The NBA doesn't give a shit. Your solution is not what they want.

OK, here's my serious question. Have the NBA, the Blazers, and the City of Portland ever, to anyone's knowledge, gotten together to see if a practical solution can be worked out? Eugene may be a bit far, but Vancouver, WA is not. Or a ship. Or whatever? I mean, has anyone actually tried? Or does the NBA just say "tough shit" and the Portland folks say "we're always disrespected"?
