again.

they hosted the game in 2008, and will host it again in 2014.

So mark that as 44 years without hosting the game in Portland, but 6 years between hosting it in New Orleans.

smh.

Apparently none of you understand just how fucking dismal the weather is in Portland during the All-star break ...

Apparently none of you understand hotel issues in Portland

Easily fixed.

Park a couple of cruise ships right next to the Rose Garden. One for the league and players, the other for the press.

It's what Olympic and World Cup cities do when they need extra hotel space.

Get a 3rd cruise ship and move all of Portland's strippers into it for the weekend.

Well it's a good thing NONE of the all-star activities take place OUTDOORS.

Team USA stayed on a cruise ship during the Olympics for security reasons when the games were held in Greece.

There's more to all-star week than the idiotic three point contest and the meaningless game, it's also about attracting people to your city to go out, have a good time and spend money. When it's pissing on your head there's not much incentive for visitors to do anything but hunker down in their hotel bar.

If I was organizing it and had my way the game would be in Vegas, New Orleans, LA, New York or Miami every goddamned year.

How is NYC weather-wise in February? One of these things is not like the others....

It's not great, but there's a shit-load of stuff to do in New York any time of the year any time of the day.

If the NBA is a conference for sustainability or urban growth, it would be in Portland every year! :)

When The HCP was in Athens for the Olympics he stayed at the Sofitel Athens........ man what a great time he had!

Does Portland really want hundreds of assholes and the King Asshole players they hang off like barnacles swarming the restaurants, leaving no tips, making it even harder for the rest of us to get a seat at 9am for breakfast?

Portland doesn't need a plague of NBA locusts.

Funny, no one has problems with winter weather on the East Coast and in the Mid West. Only rain?

Didn't Seattle get an ASG? Last time I checked it rains a lot there and gets dark earlier in winter.

I know there are conventions in Portland and vicinity. Somehow they find spaces for all those people.

It's 1000's more people than a typical convention. Here in Houston we have had the ASG, and it literally takes up all of our hotel rooms.

So the New Orleans Hornets sale included an ASG. Wonder if it included Anthony Davis?

I'm sure all of the players would be thrilled about spending a rainy weekend in Portland for the All-Star game. Hey, they could always drive to Mt. Hood or the coast and take photos of nature.

Has anything changed with regards to hotel space in Portland recently?

If not, why is anyone at all surprised that Portland hasn't been awarded an all-star game?

At some point I think people should just accept that without more hotel space Portland's never going to get one. And more hotel space is no guarantee of getting one.

There probably are some nice open-air markets for them to peruse, as well.

I've been to two all star weekends in LA, its a totally overrated experience. Most tickets are for corporate sponsors or you can fork out $300 for 200 level seats. yay.

Its also colloquially known as "Black Thanksgiving", if that's your sort of dilly. :MARIS61:

Why does this come up every year? We Blazer fans have been over this again and again.

Portland barely has enough (quality) hotel rooms if they booked the entire town.

And, even still, that won't meet the requirements as the NBA requires several very large "headquarters" hotels with extensive meeting rooms and other qualifications.

Portland doesn't meet that requirement either.

Just forget about it. It is a pretty lame event anyway. Kind of like the Oscars - very well known, hyped and with a long history where virtually no one involved is happy with the actual event.

Cities such as Portland that might aspire to host All-Star Weekend need sufficient hotel rooms, since 20,000 people flood into the city and nearly 11,000 room-nights are needed to lodge NBA personnel alone.

Stern to Portland fans: shut up about it already.

I don't get it.... What other city can offer the NBA Mrs. HCP?

But, maybe we don't want the ASG. Expounding upon what BlazerCaravan said, remember when Las Vegas got the ASG in 2007? It was a civilized riot.

Maybe not every city should get the ASG. Who wants the ASG to be in Milwaukie or Cleveland? The last thing I want to do is to show more Californians that Portland is a nice city.

It's hard to believe that in 42 years of owning one of the most successful NBA franchises, Portland still can't get an All-Star game.

I really think it has much less to do with hotels and more to do with the crappy weather in feb and the lack of nightlife options. it's just that saying a "lack of hotels" is an easy cop out.

Actually, it's easier to be honest if it's something that the city can do nothing about... why would they set themselves up for having to change their reason later (if Portland invested in more hotel space)?
