The Arena Football League team formally known as the Portland Thunder will now be called the Portland Steel, per a release from the team.

This is a historic day in Portland Arena Football history as the Arena Football League and the staff of the Portland organization focus on setting a new foundation with the exciting announcement that the team will be rebranded as the Portland Steel, effective immediately.

"Portland has an extremely strong and knowledgeable fan base that appreciates outstanding football and entertainment," AFL Commissioner Scott C. Butera said. "The new Steel brand and logo represents the region's rich competitive nature and proud history. We believe this is part of the continuation of that philosophy and the start of a solid winning tradition."

"The name 'Steel' implies the strength needed to withstand the tough, action-packed game of Arena Football," Steel general manager and head coach Ron James stated. "I am excited as the team's coach and GM to be a part of this new chapter for the Portland organization."

From the discovery of iron ore near Lake Oswego in the 1840's, to the 100+ companies that call the Portland Metro area home today, the steel industry has been a backbone of the Portland working culture for over 150 years. Steel is an overtly visible part of the Portland landscape, with foundries decorating both the Willamette and Columbia Rivers, and is seen in several of the city's 12 iconic bridges.

"We will begin the work of forging a championship level team with the Portland Steel this spring," James continued. "And our fans can expect to see a fast paced hard hitting team at Moda Center this season."

Damn, I thought this was going be an article, with a typo in the headline, about the OKC Thunder. As in, "Thunder change their name to Steal" with reference to how they stole the franchise from Seattle.

BNM

Much, much, much better.

Changed their names from the Portland whogivesashits to the Portland Stilldon'tgiveashits

So glad they changed the name. I might watch a game now. I refused to support a team named the Thunder in any capacity whatsoever.

Growlers was my favorite name choice.

Should have gone with "cement" for a different kind of confusion

Terrible, terrible name.

It's still light years better than "Thunder."

They should have mocked hipster culture with the name. Its arena fucking football. some obscure and funny name would have killed on merchandise and visibility.

Sounds too much like semen. That would have been a better name than Thunder or Steel though. both which sound like great male stripper names.

Portland Raincats. That would have been dope, I would have bought a jersey.

Or named it after some beer ingredient.

Hops gear kills here. Although, the color scheme is on point, so there's that, too.

What kind of out of touch Tualatin resident thought of this shit.

How on earth did they miss out on "Portland Cement"?

The Portland Sly Dogs would have been a winner.

Portland Platapi would be great but tbh my first choice was
the Portand Didn'tEvenHaveaFuckinClueTheyExisteds.

What is it with you and Tualatin?

Nothing really, its just kind of an easy way to quantify all basic white yuppies in the Portland Suburbs. The name of the city is kinda funny sounding so its easy to use.

Dropped. The. Ball.

Should've went with Portland Growlers, because drinking a growler of a select Portland microbrew while watching could have had actually made it enjoyable.
