OT: What Is Pop Thinking By Sitting Blair?

Blair has been a beast in the postseason, yet Poppovich won't give him even double-digit minutes. Hell, Mo Cheeks at least had the good sense to insert an inexperienced Zach Randolph into the mix in the Dallas series years ago. Why isn't Blair getting more run for the Spurs against PHX? May as well throw him in for 30 minutes over McDyess and see what happens.
 
My guess would be he doesn't like Blair's terrible defense. Especially against the pick and roll.
 
I agree, it's probably his defense.

i thought he'd be better -- he's only 6'6" but he's so huge you can't back him down, It's like pushing up against a wall. But teams now take him off the dribble and just shoot right over him. What a concept!
 
Defense doesn't matter, though, because Channing Frye makes the Suns unguardable, anyway.
 
Fire Pop, he's a horrible coach. No adjustments, horrible substitution pattern, predictable offense.

OK, since you have strong opinions on this subject, I'm going to put you on the spot. Who do you consider the top coaches in the league?

They're all tied for #1 because they know more than we do.

Hey, even Popovich said before the season started "If we don't win this year, I should be fired." I'm starting to wonder if a coaching change is needed at this point. He should have been able to get more out of Jefferson, McDyess, Hill and Blair this year. The fact that all 4 have been somewhat disappointing in different ways makes me wonder if the problem is the players or the coach. Honestly, this team hasn't been the same since P.J. Carlesimo hasn't been assistant coach.

I think the top tier of coaches are Jackson, Solan, Pop, and I might throw Adleman in there too.

Pop reminds me of Gruden in the sense that he needs strong veteran leadership to back his abrasive style. I think if he tried to coach the Nuggets it might be a total disaster.
 
If Nate got owned by Alvin, what do you call what he is doing to Pop?
 
I'm sure the Spurs fans are melting down just like a lot of Blazer fans were a week ago.

I think its clear the Suns are a lot better than many people were giving them credit for. Our effort against them wasn't near as bad as some people wanted to make it out to be.

I think you're right... the Spurs fans have a different reason to melt down, of course. They have a track record of success with this coach and this core, but... they're old. And they're just not that good of a team even where they are now.

But... the Suns are GOOD. They'll give the Lakers a tough series.

If you think about it, Spurs fans shouldn't even be that upset. I can't think of a small market team that can even come close to the success they've had the past 10 years.

The Suns are so difficult to defend, it's crazy. Steve Kerr should be proud of what he's put together.

Yes, but it's their defense that makes the difference.

Really? Because I seem to recall that you too were critical of their lack of energy and focus.

The Suns might be a good team, they might be better than the Blazers, but that is a different issue than whether the Blazers played their best in that series.


PS. I could also ask the obvious question: if Steve Kerr can build such a juggernaut - what's KP's excuse? :devilwink:

I was critical of Portland's energy and focus or San Antonio's?

I don't think I've ever said Portland played their best. Not many teams play their best and lose a series. Nobody needs me to recite all the "excuses" for why Portland may have not played their best, but I think the only thing I've been critical of are people who think Portland's lack of success was specifically because of Nate, LMA, or any one particular person.

Your KP vs Kerr argument would be the most compelling thing I've read, but I hesitate to give Kerr all the credit because I believe Nash, Amare, and Grant Hill were all on the roster when he took over. Having said that, he's done a masterful job in my opinion of putting together role players to surround the style of their all-star talent. I'm not sure if KP has done the best job of putting together a group of players that excel in the same style of play.
 
This does raise an interesting question. If a team has a group of good players, and the coach can't seem to get the best out of them, who is at fault?

Is it all on the players? Is at least part of it on the coach for being inflexible? Is it the fault of the GM for getting good players as opposed to players who fit a certain mold?

Dumping all the blame on one party strikes me as too simplistic. Letting one party off scott free also seems silly. :dunno: I'm no longer sure what needs to be done to get this team back on track.

It was a hell of a lot easier to place blame back when we were 22-60!
 
The best way to attack Phoenix is to attack Frye when he is on defense. Blair would have done that. We all know Frye is a pussy in the post. He would have only had to be in long enough to log 3 fouls on Frye.
 
Maybe he was out of the rotation because he called the Blazers' front office and was scared off by reports of his knees?

just think--we got lucky not wasting the 31 or 33 pick on a guy who can't even get on the court in the 2nd round b/c his knees have no ACLs.
Between Blair and TurkeyGlue, we really lucked out this summer
