I realize this is forum full of anonymous members that have no problem insulting decent human beings that don't live up to their expectations, but we could probably stick to his performance on the court and not his fucking Christmas card pictures.
I actually kind of almost (I said ALMOST) feel sorry for Meyers, but then he really has no one to blame but himself.
I was a Meyers supporter for the longest time. I would point out even the slightest hint of improvement. In his second season, when he couldn't hit a basket in a Pier 1 store, I mentioned that at least his rebounding was better. His third season, he was actually, briefly, an average NBA player - and at 7'1" and only 22, I figured great things were in store.
Then the wheels fell off. We fired Kim Hughes, Meyers became a 1-dimensional 3-point shooter, with declining percentages. Basically two solid years of massive regression. His 5th season in the league was his worst. That should not happen and there is no one to blame but Meyers. He is the one that is ultimately responsible for his performance on the court and his improvement. He is the owner of his career and he has failed. It's disappointing and you can't really blame anyone else.
So, people here take out their frustrations and he's an easy target. Don't want people making fun of you, play better. If the guy was averaging 20/10 or even 10/5, people would probably be talking about how his off court goofiness makes him such a good fit in Portland (like RoLo and Channing Frye). Instead, they call him names. Yeah, I hate to blame the victim, but when you're 7'1" and making $41 million, you're not exactly a true victim.
So, if he doesn't want people making fun of his goofy fucking Christmas card, how about posting some photos of you working your ass of to improve your game and earn that $41 million that was bestowed upon you? Use some of that cash to hire your own big man coach/mentor. Others have done it. Hire Kevin McHale, Hakeem, Chris Kayman, Kim Hughes, whoever, to work with you during the off season. Even if you still suck, if you at least put in the effort to get better, people will respect that and cut you some slack. The people of Portland value effort. We have a way of embracing average players who work their asses off (Steve Blake, Joel Przybilla, etc.). Become one of those guys.
And who knows, if you put in that kind of work, you might actually see the results on the floor. The ball's in your court - literally.
