Our new roster - Questions abound

It doesn't seem like we are done. If Aldridge leaves, we have $35 mil in cap space. But who's left?

I actually look at it this way: Young roster with some high-ceiling players who will come into their own in 1-3 years, a probable lottery pick next year and an unbelievable amount of cap room ... if you can find a top free agent who will give Portland a serious look.

TOBIAS. GOD DAMN. HARRIS.

I'm warming to the idea; he's a decent shooter (50% 2P 32% 3P career, with a big jump in 3P% last season)... good rebounder. We'll miss a bunch of shots, so that'll be nice.

We're definitely in the lottery next season. Problem is there's one great player in the next draft. The 2nd best prospect would've been picked 11th this year.

The 2017 draft is much deeper; and if we're again in the lottery we get to keep both years picks. Denver only gets second rounders.

So I think thats the plan; play a fun style of basketball and aim to make the playoffs in 2018. The west is such a bloodbath we could even be a 45win team and we are in the lottery the next two years.

FA isn't over. Because 2016 is a shit show past the top 5 (at the moment) I think we are gonna put together the best team possible. We have a lot of cap space and trade bait. I truly believe we will be competing for a playoff spot.

Seems to me some of the teams in the West also got worse.

The Clippers lost Jordan.
Who is the Mavericks' point guard now? They also lost Monta Ellis.
The Spurs are a year older, and lost Belinelli.

yeah, we have no idea where we're at. For example, the following is very possible:
give Tobias Harris the Max, trade for Derozan who is on the block.

Lillard, Derozan, Harris, Davis, Plumlee
is a very intriguing team that's probably leapfrogged Utah as an up and coming young team.

Have you seen the free agents available? The only starter level player left is Kosta Koufus. Then its players like Wesley Johnson, Carlos Boozer and Jeremy Lin. They couldn't do anything for the Lakers last year; no thanks. The playoffs are out of reach.

Sure we can hold out hope we play like the 2013 Suns and shock the league. But I'm going to keep my expectations realistic. We should be well into the lottery.

I like what you're getting at. One change though, Meyers in the starting lineup over Davis. We'd need his shooting.

It's not just free agents, we can trade for bigger contracts... We can absorb good players who make a little more than they're worth.

No I don't think I want DeRozan; it likely costs us CJ and Meyers. I'd rather aim for a player we don't have to trade away other assets for.

Utah played great post allstar break and we will be far behind them.

Harris will get matched at the max; Orlando has nothing else to spend cap money on.

As you are I'm also excited to see what the final pieces of our cap room bring. Heck we have $28 million to spend. But I'm going to be realistic with my expectations. We can't get players with positive trade value such as DeRozan or Tobias Harris for free.

GREAT points. The west is deeper now but it's not as strong at the top.

The rumor is that Orlando will NOT match Harris - they just spend a lotto pick on one, and have a third that they like as well.

I don't have inside info. on what they'll want for DeRozan, but the rumor is that he's on the block because they don't want to pay him next year.

I am not completely pulling this out of my a$$, it's realistic according to the rumors that are currently out there.

Tobias Harris would be. the best guy to throw money at if he's not matched. He's going to be a star

Not sure if I like the idea of giving Harris the max. Yes theres upside since he's 22 but I don't know if its allstar upside. He will always have defensive limitations. Is that the best pairing with Dame? If we get one way players think I'd rather target defensive forwards. Afflalo also put up nice stats on horrific Orlando teams.

If we max him and are wrong about his production that could be a contract which really prevents us from improvements down the road. The thing I really like about the Aminu/Ed Davis contracts is even if they become crap players we could move those deals easily as part of a bigger trade. But the Harris contract has the potential to be really bad. If he doesn't get matched thats a giant red flag; what do the Magic know we don't? How good is his work ethic after getting a huge pay day? I'll trust Neil on this one.

I'm down for that plan, but I don't know about some of the people in the organization. I don't think Lillard wants to waste his a couple years in the lottery. He's a fierce competitor and would hate losing so much.

But convincing Paul Allen might be harder. Ever since his health deteriorated several years ago, he seems impatient to rebuild. However, if there ever was a time to suck, it'd be these next 2 seasons where our 1st round pick is in jeopardy.
