Think of all the moves made recently that we now regret:
Trading Trent Jr. for Norm Powell
Trading TWO first rounders for RoCo
Trading a first rounder for Larry Nance Jr.

We could've had:
2020 (first RoCo pick): Tyrese Maxey/Saddiq Bey/Desmond Bane/Isaiah Stewart
2021: Bones Hyland/Herb Jones

Plus Gary Trent Jr. Plus the pick we traded for Nance (which was lottery protected, otherwise we'd be giving it up this year).

We would be FURTHER ALONG if we hadn't tried to "win now". And yet here we are, contemplating DOING IT AGAIN.

Not saying I didn't approve of some of the trades - I liked RoCo (although even at the time I thought 2 picks was steep) and I thought Trent had nosedived after amazing play-in Bubble play. I still don't think he's amazing, but he's a great three point shooter and his D has bounced back, and of course, we offloaded Norm for next to nothing.

Good point. I wonder how much of it was caused by pressure from the fans and media ........to do something "now".

I don't think Olshey was building around Dame. If he were, he would have been adding defense and length and more defense and length. He would have traded CJ when his stock was highest.
It looks like Olshey just wanted a fun lineup of guys who could all shoot 3-pointers. I guess he was trying to win now. But not to win a playoff series.

Cronin does seem to be building around Dame. He's added players like Hart and Winslow who are not ball stoppers and play defense (and offense) with intensity without slacking off.
I do hope he thinks twice about trading young players (calling them draft picks really understates their value) for anyone who doesn't have the motor of Hart and Winslow and Nassir Little.

Edit: Take a look at the starting lineup for the Pelicans. CJ McCollum with 6'8", 24-year-old Brandon Ingram; 23-year-old, 6'7" Herb Jones; 21-year-old, 6'11" Jaxson Hayes; and 29-year-old, 6'11" Jonas Valenciunas. That's one version of what building around a small guard should look like.

that is complete and utter bullshit

those were no attempts to build around Dame. Those were ALL olshey attempts to build around Dame AND CJ. Those were absolutely moves that was olshey doubling down, again and again, on his initial terrible bet that CJ was an elite player. In his fevered brain he welded CJ to Dame and never once let go of that idiotic fantasy. That's why he held CJ untouchable in his trade talks for PG13 and Butler.

last fall you were arguing in favor of trading Dame and building around CJ. You tried to disguise it by saying the goal was to build up CJ's trade value but that was fooling nobody. This thread isn't fooling anybody either

LMAO LOLOOOLLLLOL "HOT TAKE ALERT

NOT

So much aggro towards Rasta. I think his point (at least as I take it) is a good one: the Blazers have been thinking we're a player or two away and have been mortgaging to future to try to take advantage of Dame's prime years.

That's a mistake.

It was a mistake in the cases of the OP, and it would/be a mistake to do it in the offseason.

So was the Warriors recent downturn dut to building around Curry or the Lakers crapping the bed because they built around LeBron?

Horrible take here. NO made bad trades and horrible signings along with the flawed concept of a backcourt of Lillard and CJ ever being a contender. This has nothing to do with building around Dame.

Easy to regret draft picks in hindsight. That’s true for every team in the league. Building around one of the best players of all time in his prime is a good thing. We just made some mistakes along the way. Every team does.

So much aggro towards Rasta.

Rasta is fine as a poster. I've had good discussions with him in the past and I've given him some shit at times while he has returned fire. All in fun

But I have paid attention and Rasta has been working the 'trade-Dame' and 'Dame's-the problem' narratives for a damn long time. he's made a couple of dozen threads about it over the last year. So then, if he's going to be aggressive in pushing that POV, people are going to match that aggression in counter-punches...it's the internet after all

and it's not like I haven't been the target of counter-punching when I beat my favorite dead horses. I have been quite often, even with some of the punches being below the belt. That's fine. The irony is that I had built a reputation of being one of the most negative posters around here and suddenly, with the absolutely-needed dismantling of the olshey-roster, I'm apparently one of the big sunshine-pumpers. Quite the pivot

Our worst mistake is trying to build around one of the best, if not the best player in franchise history? That's a hard one for me to sign off on.

I think our worst mistake is not putting a better collection of talent around the best player in franchise history. I can think of the last player as good as Dame to go 7+ years in his prime with less talent around him.

If we have the opportunity to draft Shaedon Sharpe (or even Ivey) and go for a PF cUz NeEd then you can add that to the list of mistakes.

Maybe I phrased it wrong: I meant "trading youth for win-now players". That very rarely works out, but it's what you do if you think your star player is getting impatient.

It works if they are actually win-now players. If you lose, they were never win-now players. They were just bad players.

Especially when the win now players aren't win now players.

The Clippers disagree.

RoCo and Nance were actually pretty damn good acquisitions of their kind, given the position we were in. When you're in that position, though, YOU DON'T TRADE YOUR DRAFT PICKS. Draft picks are the only way teams like us (small market, not going to get FAs) rebuild.
