Overtime games

The Blazers are so good in close games, but so bad in overtime. 1-2 could be called a statistical fluke; 1-4 is not.

I really have no idea why. It's not lack of clutch shooters; they have them. Sometimes the team gets free throw brick disease, but most of the time they're pretty decent from the line. It's not that they lose composure; their record in close regulation games shows they do not.

Anyone care to hazard a guess?

P.S., totally different topic, but what on earth has happened to the Pistons? They were considered one of the top teams in the East at start of season, now they are struggling to get the #8 seed.

I noticed the same thing. My guess is that the Blazers either 1) spend so much energy coming from behind (since that seems to be a nasty habit this year) that we are tired in OT 2) we get way too predictable in OT (iso for Brandon) 3) as a young team I wonder if there is a sense of relieve when we make it to OT in some of those games so we relax a little bit and/or 4) we fall behind to start games why not when OT starts??? Ok the was said in jest but still.

I think it's beacuse Roy tries to take over the games like some sort of superman. The other teams know it so they put the skids on him and we lose. I like Roy, but late in games he loses as many games for us as he wins.

Who else should be the one to have the ball in the final seconds of a game then your best player? I am wondering where your "Roy has lost us 50% of all close games" stat comes from. He may not have delivered against Cleveland or Philly but he has come through many, many times this year.

Therefore, it keeps him effective if we have a second, or even third option. When teams have to play Roy straight up, he will usually get the job done, and that's what we need to do.

Its because you guys are a 4th quarter team and OT is right after that...If you guys didnt have to push so hard in the 4th (10 wins this year when trailing at the start of the 4th IIRC) you guys would have something left in the tank in overtime. It also doesnt help that Roy is bitching about a call on one side of the court when AI is making the "nail in the coffin" layup on the other end

Seems to me like we play OT the same way we start games (not very good). Maybe sub-consciously the team feels like they are starting a new game and can play crappy ball and "turn it on in the 4th". From what I recall about our OT games this season, the other team ran away with it in our 4 losses.

Also, I get feelings about this team, and in OT, I always get the feeling that they are going to get wasted. I"m not sure how I pick up on it, but I think they get really deflated when they don't pull out the big win. They are 8-1 in games decided by 2 or less this season. But those are regulation games.

That record should really be 9-5.

And to top it all off, seems like all of our conferance rivals have been pulling 1-2 point wins out of their asses over the last 2 weeks. EVERY FUCKING ONE OF THEM.

I blame Nate's insistence on ignoring our team's deep bench in close games, playing the starters long 4th quarter minutes and all of OT.

Aside from the players getting tired, slowing down, and playing little defense, our offense becomes too predictable without switching some players in and out.

i wouldn't consider 5 games enough to indicate that the blazers are terrible in overtime.

the blazers have seemed to have made a habit of falling behind and having to come back and the energy they spend doing that could affect their ability to play the extra minutes of an overtime game(like darizzle said).

iverson doesn't fit with the team as well as billups did. sheed is having the worst year of his career. the team doesn't really have an identity.

i wouldn't consider 5 games enough to indicate that the blazers are terrible in overtime.

Having watched all 5 OT's is more than enough to convince me.

of course you could watch a 5 minute period of any blazers game and come away thinking they were the worst team in the league. doesn't mean it's meaningful.

I agree. The 1st line is tired from being played over 25+ minutes. I think Nate should go to his reserve bench more in the final OT or at least mix up the 1st and 2nd unit more. He doesn't have a game plan for the OT and we will continue to lose the rest of these OT games. You can quote me on that.
