A 35-year-old man in Pennsylvania is facing rape and assault charges after a woman was sexually assaulted on board a public transit train Wednesday night as riders witnessed the attack but did not intervene, authorities said on Friday.

The woman was assaulted at around 11 p.m. while riding the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) Market-Frankford line towards the town of Upper Darby.

"The assault was observed by a SEPTA employee, who called 911, enabling SEPTA officers to respond immediately and apprehend the suspect in the act," Andrew Busch, a SEPTA spokesperson, said in a statement.

SEPTA officers arrested the man, later identified as 35-year-old Fiston Ngoy, according to Upper Darby Police Superintendent Timothy Bernhardt.

Surveillance video captured the entirety of the assault, giving investigators enough evidence to charge Ngoy with rape and assault, Bernhardt told NBC Philadelphia.

The video also shows how riders, who also witnessed the attack, did nothing to help the woman being assaulted, according to Bernhardt.

"It's disturbing," he said. "I'm shocked, I have no words for it. I just can't imagine seeing what you were seeing through your own eyes and seeing what this woman was going through that no one would step in and help her."

What the fuck is wrong with people. They just stand there and watch a woman get raped? They should all be in jail.

I see that shit, I'm pulling the dude off the woman and beating his ass.

This is a common societal behavior though. Everyone thinks someone else will do something. People are afraid of intervening. What if he has a gun? What if he has a knife? Am I putting myself at risk? I'm sure they all probably wanted to do something, but fear or panic prevented them from stepping in.

There was a TV special on I think 60 minutes or something where they had a big white guy kidnapping a little girl in broad daylight. Almost everyone ignored it. A group of black teens were the only ones who actually stepped up and were about to beat the dudes ass.

Edit - not teens. Just some badass dudes.

You can't do anything these days, lawsuits, cancel culture, Karen's, etc.

Sometimes it's necessary to put yourself at risk. I saved a woman at a bus stop once and got stabbed for it. I worked at a grocery store back then. I got off one night around 10pm and starting walking home, as I didn't live far from the store.

I came upon some weirdo messing with a young woman at a bus stop. She kept asking him to leave her alone and he wouldn't. He was touching her and harassing her. I told him to leave her alone and to leave. He told me to mind my own business and kept trying to harass her. I told him again to leave her alone. He took out a knife and came at me. We tussled. He stabbed me in my shoulder (I still have the scar.) I stepped back and looked at the knife sticking out of my shoulder. I pulled it out and looked back at him and he ran away.

I stayed with the woman till her bus came.

I could have just kept walking and never said a word. But, that woman might have got raped or killed. I got stabbed, but knowing what he might have done to that woman, I'm ok with that.

Chris, I do think it's easy to say "well I would have done something. I would have beat the shit out of that guy," but you really only have to look to our own city for an example of bystanders losing their lives because they stepped in.

What's easy is to stand and watch. I have done something as you can read about in my above post, and I would again.

Look, I agree there are some situations where there isn't much you can do, like if some one is openly shooting people. Sure, you'd like to think you would tackle that guy and stop him. Probably not a great idea.

There are times where you can step in. I believe this time, this incident on the train was one of those. There was enough people there to step forward and subdue this guy. But, they chose to be cowards. I'm not going to excuse them.

You are both right.

most do nothing out of fear.
But sometimes there is a person around who overcomes that fear.

ive done it more than once, with disregard for myself.
its disturbing how many people let fear drive them though.

I wasn't even thinking about myself when I helped that woman. I guess I was so concerned for her safety, I didn't even consider mine. I just acted. I don't know, maybe there was fear subconsciously or something. But, all I remember is this woman needed help and I was going to help.

I once tried to stop a man who was hitting a woman. Eventually she ran down the street and almost every bystander berated me. One said no one should come between A man and HIS woman, if he wants to shoot her dead it's his business.

Good for you and fuck them. You did the right thing.

I'm not saying you were/are wrong my man. I'm just saying that I think an argument can be made for both sides. I have a family. I have a daughter. On the one hand, I would like to think that I would step up like you did, but on the other I have to think about all the angles because I can't die protecting a stranger and leave my kid to grow up without a father.

I have to say it..... every one of the situations in this thread would have been stopped by someone with a gun.

Chris wouldn't have been stabbed. He would have maybe had to shoot a guy, but he wouldn't have been stabbed.

The lady above would not have been raped.

The people on that MAX train would not have been killed.

A responsible gun owner who is legally carrying could have prevented all of those stories from happening. With that said, I have had a concealed carry license but I did not really enjoy carrying. I don't like the potential for things to go badly in a different direction. But had there been someone carrying in those situations, it's very possible they could have gone another way.

No gun needed. Just a damn phone. Call 911. Trains all have emergency pull or button. Don't have to physically tackle the asshole.

Damn. I knew you were badass but not batman level. Respect.

A possibility none of you are going to like is that there were men who did nothing because they were enjoying it. I am not one of those who say all porn is rape but there is a sizable genre of rape born and it wouldn't exist if men didn't get off watching women be violated.

Im watching game of thrones for the second time. And though i know its nonfiction fantasy.
The one disgusting thing aBout it is how the women are treated, pawned off like slaves.

I cant help but think of some of the things ive read you post, when watching some scenes.
And then i think, my God… men are just filthy disgusting.

The only solace i have is i know I'm not like them, so not all men can be the same.

More of my kind MUST step up in situations like what @Chris Craig did, or like when i put my safety aside and rushed into a brawl to get a girl getting stomped on, out of it.

The key in life, is trying to maintain an impartial judgement, regardless of history and a growing jaded feeling against a sect of people.

many many men can def. Be pure evil though.

My mother was trapped into abusive relationships for a long ling time. Attracted to guys that beat her.
Why? (Shes never been able to answer. )
What drives some women to these types of men?
Im not saying the woman, my mom, is at all to blame, but, when men see this, it helps justify their treatment of women.

“ see? She keeps coming back. She likes it!”

i know this isn't true. But….evil men will ride that thought to their grave.

You know, I thought of that. Was even going to make a joke about it, but thought it would've been in poor taste (even for me!).

So they were cowards, reprobates, or both. Either way, not a good look for them. Disgusting.

I had a close friend that I completely broke friendship with after we found out he was regularly physically abusive to his wife. Dude hid it really well for years, until one day it got so bad that his wife had to call the police and told them of his history of violence towards her. Only dirtbags hit women and children.
