Bill Gates schemed to take shares in Microsoft Corp. from his co-founder during the early days of the software company following his partner's treatment for cancer, according to a new memoir by the billionaire co-founder, Paul Allen.

The allegation is part of a critical portrait in the book of Mr. Gates, with whom Mr. Allen formed a friendship in grade school that evolved into one of the iconic partnerships of American business. The book, "Idea Man: A Memoir by the Co-founder of Microsoft," is scheduled to go on sale on April 17. A draft of the memoir was viewed by The Wall Street Journal. An excerpt of the book appeared on Vanity Fair's website early Wednesday.

I guess this means Gates won't be coming to any more Blazer games.

Hmm...a couple of guitars, a cat bed under the desk, and what look like Emmys on the far counter. Interesting snap shot into one of the most mysterious men in America.

Don't forget the Thinker replica statue, triangular mandolin, and twin iPods.

The only thing missing is a replica Larry O'Brien trophy.

Did you guys read the excerpt in Vanity Fair? It was interesting to find out that PA had a serious gf and that they moved out to Boston together. I wonder what happened to her?

I hope he gets his teeth fixed one of these days. Do it, Paul!

Oh man I'm sorry. I didn't see that.

Think I should merge the threads?

No way. However one day, and it may be a long long time from now, i will call upon you for a repayment of this debt. Do not forget.

Not really. All that happened long ago - before Paul bought the Blazers.

Huh? Am I missing some sly humor there, barfo? The book just came out, and it publicly slams Gates. THAT is new, and I would imagine it affects their friendship.

Weren't they already not friends?

They're pretending to have a feud so people will buy their books. Remember the Biggie/Tupac feud? Same shit, it's just computer nerds this time.

Two most interesting things for me from the excerpt: 1. that it was Allen's idea that they should start selling the license for each individual use of the software, rather than a flat price to each computer manufacturer; as the book says this idea added billions to revenue over the years. 2. that when Allen left the company, Gates could have bought him out for a fairly small sum but even he didn't have an idea of how massive the company would become over the years, and so he didn't want to pay up.

The story in the book (that was excerpted here) has been told many times before and is surely well known to both Gates and Allen. Gates and Allen have been seen together at Blazer games since those events, hence I think it is fair to say they've gotten past it, with respect to attending Blazer games.

Now, I haven't read the whole book, so maybe there is something in there that will piss Bill off. But retelling a story that has been public for years presumably won't do it.

There's a new article that says they're negotiating an appearance together on the Jerry Springer show. I put down a buck on Gates because he's nimbler, but Allen has more weight, so I don't know.

Ah. I didn't know that. Still, for Allen to put it all in a book, and tell the whole world that his best friend double-crossed him, seems like a new insult. Unless of course it actually is a promotional gimmick that both men have agreed on.

I doubt either Paul or Bill see it as double-crossing, more like Bill being Bill. Is a lion evil for attacking a zebra?

Yeah, the stock story is hardly new. It would be surprising if Allen did not mention it.

Cat bed? I thought he had no pets. Of course, cats are not really pets. They are owners.

Clearly, he likes being high up.

Motorcycle? I see a helmet in a corner chair.

I'm very surprised he didn't mention me in the book.

No one is interested in him mentioning his gardener.
