Check your chip fan immediately. Check the vents on your computer case for dust.

Heat kills.

Go to "Start", then "Run", type in "dxdiag" and paste your results here.

Don't worry, this is nothing bad. It just shows me what hardware you have in your computer. It could just be really fucking bad.

just take off most of the bloatware from msconfig.

Yep I would check this for sure. The other things to think about are:

1. Did anything change before the problem started (Hardware or Software, including updates)?

2. Make sure your fans are running for cooling on the inside of the case. If they are running, check them to see if they are running when your computer locks up. Sometimes fans run intermittently.

3. Have you backed up your data in case your system is about to ground zero? If you have a sign your computer is about to go tits up, you might want to back it up.

BUY A MAC!
Ditto.
Macs don't freeze as much. You can always do a force quit if a program (safari, etc) isn't loading. Plus a restart is real quick on a mac.

My mac is a 2001 model and its been running fine ever since I got it. I modified it of course.

2001 Powermac G4 Digital Audio Tower (533 mhz original)
133 mhz bus
Single Sonnet G4 1.4 ghz processor chip with 2mb L3 cache
1.5 gb of ram
OS 10.4.x
128mb ati 9800 (4x agp)
2 internal drives, 17" apple flatscreen ADC connection.

My rig:

//AMD Phenom II X4 955 3.2GHz//
Gigabyte MA790XT-UD4P//
ATI HD 4890 OC'd 950MHz//
Corsair 2x2GB DDR3//
2 x Western Digital 640G
