Top golfers who will compete in new Saudi-funded LIV Golf Invitational Series

The LIV Golf Invitational Series, a controversial new league designed to compete with the PGA Tour, will start play Thursday at the Centurion Golf Club in London.

The eight-tournament golf series, founded by two-time British Open winner Greg Norman, is supported financially by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. Saudi Arabia has been criticized for human rights abuses, and crown prince Mohammed bin Salman has been accused of sanctioning the 2018 murder and dismemberment of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi.

The Official Golf World Ranking will not recognize the event, meaning competitors will not earn any points from participating. This has not stopped more than 40 players from committing to play for the $255 million prize money, which is the richest in golf history. Bryson DeChambeau will join the league starting July 1-3 for the event in North Plains, Oregon, his agent said Wednesday.

company’s website, as well as YouTube and Facebook. Here’s a look at the top players set to compete in this new golf league teeing off Thursday, at 9 a.m. ET (2 p.m. local).

I've heard a couple rumors that the RBC Canadian open is going to be cancelled this weekend. Not sure if the exodus of some of the major players to the LIV Golf Series is contributing to that, but this is definitely bad news for the PGA.

Will anyone be attending the event in North Plains?

This thing is cray. Colin Cowherd was talking about this yesterday. Said Tiger Woods was offered nearly a billion dollars to join and turned it down.

I would be extremely surprised if the Canadian Open gets cancelled. We shall see.
It won't be. The rumor was from a guy I'm playing fantasy golf with because he didn't want anyone to set their lineup.. -__-

There are a lot of golfers that are leaving to play with LIV though. Still something to keep an eye on.

Oh yes, I agree it will be interesting to see how things play out with LIV. I would be interested in seeing the tournament at Pumpkin Ridge. I don't like the idea of getting in bed with the Saudi's though.

The relationship America has with Saudi Arabia is very... Idk what word I'm looking for... Hypocritical?

Can someone explain the issue here in a nutshell?
My Golf Channel insiders are calling the money they used to set this up is "Blood Money" This whole situation is going to get crazy,. I got asked to work a LIV event this past few weeks. I was booked and said no. Had no idea what this was all about until yesterday.

I would be careful what you say, Saudi Arabia kills reporters and you work in media...

The Saudi's can have golf as far as I'm concerned. Take it and be gone.

My GC friend said it's coming between players on the tour. Guys talking shit about each other in the media, calling them out. Gonna get nuts

Anyone turning their noses up at the LIV and the relationship with the Saudi Arabia government, while doing so on an NBA teams message board (the league that has sold it's soul to China) should really be careful lobbing around the hypocrite stones in those glass houses they've built.

Fair enough. Excellent point.

PGA suspends 17 golfers for participating. That'll show em!

How does the PGA overcome a competitor that has unlimited cash and doesn't care about ROI? Not to mention, the PGA doesn't run any of the majors, so unless all 4 majors fall in line, these "suspended" players will still be able to play in them (for now). Tough spot for the PGA.

I actually didn't realize that. Good point. I'm sure half the golfers on tour ask saying to themselves "fuck the PGA", in that case.

Precisely what Dustin Johnson did. I think a handful of the other LIV participants turned in their PGA card as well. They just flat out resigned from the PGA.

The PGA does run the PGA Championship I believe. So they control one of the majors.

As always. Show me the money.

They don't. PGA of America runs the PGA Championship. Different entities.

I thought they ran the PGA as well but don't, it's very confusing. Tough to blame the guys going on the LIV Tour, more money, less rounds, more time to be with family. Anyone going out to Pumpkin Ridge the end of June for the stop there?

I’m working it. I’ll take that blood money FAMS!

...and a free round of golf too?! :dunno: Some more names defecting: Bryson Deshambutt, Peepee Reed, Fat Perez, Matt Wolffe...
Most events we work have Media Monday’s. You put your name in a lottery and sometimes you get lucky. I’m not very good at golf, but I’ve hit 150+ on some of the best courses in the world.
