A fallstreak hole is a circular gap that appears in high clouds, when a section of the cloud freezes. The ice crystals are heavy, so they fall out of the cloud, leaving a hole. It is a relatively rare phenomenon.
A rare cloud formation Monday in southeastern Australia that looked like a huge hole in the sky with a rainbow through it prompted some wild interpretations on social media.
Some claimed the rapture was upon us or that aliens had descended. Neither was the case according to scientists who call the phenomenon a fallstreak hole.
