Citing the financial burden in a struggling economy and after Republican protests, President Barack Obama on Friday ordered the Environmental Protection Agency to shelve a proposal to tighten smog standards...... Environmental activists immediately pounced on the move as a retreat by a weakened Obama administration trying to cut deals with Republicans in Congress. And the American Lung Association vowed to fight the move in court.

It's all just slipping away...

At a time when the economy has the highest unemployment/underemployment rate in history, Obama has to reconsider monetary punitive policies against business based on debatable science. That said, it seems to me he could have found some sort of middle ground with the GOP, but chose not to. I think if he would have been more level headed in the beginning this would have a much better direction.

Oh I think it was a bad idea to try to implement those kinds of regulations at this juncture. I think it's something good to strive for, but until the economy is back on its feet it would be bad to force cities to try to figure out a way to reduce their emissions. With that said, I'm not the one Obama is trying to keep happy because I didn't vote for him in 2008 and I won't vote for him in 2012.

If it's not more than window dressing, good for President Obama. The left has nowhere to go but to vote for him, so he's smart to pivot and try to win back independents. He can subtly send the message to the environmentalists that once he's re-elected with no election in front of him, he'll enact all of their policies, but for right now he has to appease the moderates and the right.

I really don't see any proof that the GOP would be willing to compromise on anything, let alone the EPA.

The proposed smog standard would have required cities to lower ozone emissions, most of which come from power plants, vehicles and factories. It was estimated to cost anywhere between $19 billion and $90 billion, depending on how strictly enforced it would be.

The EPA earlier estimated the rule would save as much as $100 billion in health costs, and help prevent as many as 12,000 premature deaths from heart and lung complications.

EPA chief Lisa Jackson issued her own statement, citing past accomplishments and ending with a curt: "We will revisit the ozone standard, in compliance with the Clean Air Act."


This ends up costing Americans 10 billion more than it saves for businesses. And 12,000 human lives.

Another cowardly political cave-in, or just another lie he told to get elected. Either way, the small parties on the left are going to pick up enough votes to get noticed in 2012. Obama is steadily pissing off every single person who voted for him, whether it's caving in to big business, caving on illegal immigration, caving to meaningless healthcare legislation, caving to gun control nuts, caving to warmongering empire-builders...
