And how, pray tell, do you do that?

I guess by picking better candidates, not that we had much choice here.

Though Biden and Hilary weren't my first choice either. I wanted Bernie and Klobuchar, though looking at these last two races with women, she probably wouldn't have won anyway.

Reagan Calls For Abolishing Education Dept.
1982

In his State of the Union speech, President Ronald Reagan calls for the end of the Department of Education. Reagan says he believes that decisions about education should be made at the local level and that the federal government should play only a minor role in the nation’s schools. The speech stirs a debate in Congress. In the end, the department is funded, although at lower levels than in the past.

What were Dems offering these people?
Same as they offered me: not getting rounded up by the gestapo.

This to me is Latino Catholics coming through for the anti abortion candidate. I knew they could be tapped into by conservatives and have been worrying about this for 20+ years but I didn’t think they’d vote for this iteration of their party.

Could be. Choice of education is also a big concern of theirs. They don't want to be stuck sending their kids to shitty schools in bad neighborhoods. They want to be able to choose where their kids go to school.

I have never once heard that; where are you getting this hobby horse from?

It appears they think republicans are offering more... The big one is choice of education.

They think wrong

Republicans aren't going to give them shit.

Just going to give the rich the biggest tax breaks in history, take away people's health care, rights, social security and more.

The greatest con the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he did not exist.

They were saying last night this was a reason Latinos went to Trump. Pretty silly though. Have they looked at a list of worst education systems in the US? Mostly red states.

I don't disagree... but that's not going to get anybody excited about voting. Fear is intense but it wears off fast. It wore off after we fired him in 2020.

It will in four years when they see for themselves how bad Republicans are going to fuck them, but it can't be all about that.

The Dems need to reboot. Find some good candidates for the 2028 primary removed from all this bullshit. The DNC needs to do some soul searching and reinvent their platform so it's focused on the people, what they want and what needs to be done. Fuck the opponent, fuck the other party. Focus on the people.

Ah yes, so they vote for the party that will somehow make education worse. Works for me. I need no further explanation.
Democrats aren't fixing the education system... so they think the voucher system that helps them pick a private school is best for them personally. And if it doesn't work they'll just leave.

Democrats need to offer something better. They aren't even addressing it. Aren't addressing healthcare.

I only hope we come through it and learn our lesson... But it took Europe being blown to pieces in WW2 for them to learn...

I was hoping this thread would drift away and never be seen again…boy was I wrong. Have a feeling it will catch up to the Melo thread in the next 4 years.
Bad times are inevitable; what we do during them defines us. Fight if you can, but survive no matter what.

Democrats couldn't offer anything better because everything they did got blocked by Congress or SCOTUS.

Gonna fix that border issue? Not while Trump needs it as a wedge issue in a run for president.

Gonna fill all those judgeships? Mitch McConnell says no, despite all Congressional precedent.

We'll forgive some of your student loan debt. Nyet, say Roberts, Thomas and Alito.

Hey, the American people voted in Barack Obama on healthcare reform, but then the GOP cut off the individual mandate that would have helped pay for it at the knees. In spite of that, it still was popular.

I'm just not seeing where the Dems get a chance to fix this. THIS was the chance.

The GOP is almost guaranteed 48 Senate seats every year because the Dems will never turn places like Wyoming and the Dakotas, and the Deep South keeps it hard for non-whites to vote.

The House is going to be gerrymandered more than ever.

SCOTUS will have three openings this cycle, including one left-winger.

On top of that, Clinton, Obama and Biden all started by inheriting an array of mess from their GOP predecessor that needed to be addressed before they could move on to their own legislation. They've never gotten credit for that, either.

Nah, this country is just too far to the right. It's going to go even farther, IMO.

Heh, I just got an email from Kamala Harris asking for donations to help down-ballot Democrats hold Republicans accountable.

Like I have money to dump into a pit that couldn't hold the Republicans accountable even when they had the numerical advantage.

I'm pretty much inclined to just let the Republicans do everything they want unopposed. People wanted this. Let them have it and do it and our electorate can enjoy what they chose or suffer from it.

I agree. This was the chance. 2016 was the chance.

It's going to have to get really bad for anybody to want to make any changes from here on out. It's going to take a lot.

I'm not going to give up hope that it can be fixed. I know for sure it will take better candidates. It will take a much better platform. It will take a populist who's actually good as a person. Somebody who knows the ins and outs of all of the policies they are proposing. Who is a great speaker. A great debater. And who can antagonize the right into actually debating rather than running away from debates the way Trump did.

Maybe a Pete Buttigieg can do that? Is he actually good? I was disappointed with the way he threw his support behind Biden in 2020... Seemed like just another power hungry politician seeking the support of lobbyists...

I don't think Gavin Newsom would be much of a change from Biden. So we'd be stuck in the same situation, only it would be worse because we're going to lose so much over the next 4 years.

I agree with you. I just think we lost because Democrats weren't offering anything. They haven't been for years.

Nobody currently active in democratic politics can lead this country out of the death spiral it’s in. We are the Weimar Republic, and Trump is going to want to try out his new immunity on some assassinations.
