BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) - Police shot and killed an armed eighth-grader in his South Texas middle school hallway on Wednesday.

Brownsville police Detective J.J. Trevino said police received a call at about 8 a.m. that there was someone with a weapon at Cummings Middle School. Police found the 15-year-old student with a handgun in a hallway and shot him, Trevino said.

Cameron County Justice of the Peace Kip V. Johnson Hodge told The Brownsville Herald the student died.

Trevino said the school was immediately placed on lockdown, and that no one else was injured.

A school administrator apparently noticed the student carrying the gun and called Brownsville and school district police, Trevino said. He said investigators hadn't determined whether the student fired any shots, and he said he had no information on why the student might have had the gun on him.

"It's still under investigation, as far as how he came about to bringing the weapon or if he encountered anybody or anything else," Trevino said.

A school district spokeswoman didn't immediately respond to phone messages from The Associated Press, and calls to the school rang unanswered.

Brownsville is 280 miles south of San Antonio on the southern tip of Texas.

LOL what moron's. It's a 13 year old kid with a handgun...could of easily been dis-armed without being shot. Than they could of found out why he had a gun.

Only in America.

He could have "easily been disarmed"? Are you serious?

How many shots would he have to have fired before they "easily" disarmed him?

Also... why do you say he's 13 when the story claims he's 15?

The most common reason for a kid to carry at school is because the school authorities have refused to protect him from bullying.

The Second Amendment gives him the absolute right to do so.

Murder by cop was the apparent result in this case.

If my kids went to that school and this idiot put their lives in danger, I'd be glad the cops shot him!

Interestingly enough, I've rented this movie for tonight. Heard a lot of schools have been showing it:

Maris, I know you do this to troll, so my reply is not dirrected to you , rather to those weak of mind that would believe your post

I would not even have to drive you through an Oakland, LA, or Rialto "hood", to show you 15 year olds that are better armed than the cops...but just drive through North PDX. Pick up the last sixty days gang activity, shootings both lethal and non lethal.

There are 15 year olds that will kill you to steal your sneaks.

I'd imagine that if a 15 y/o was still in middle school, and had access to a weapon that he felt he could bring to class...he's not the one being bullied.

Dude, I don't think minors are allowed to have guns even under the second amendment. Just taking a big guess.

I blame Bush.

Police shot and killed an eighth-grader in the hallway of his middle school Wednesday after the boy brandished what looked like a handgun and pointed it at officers. It turned out to be a pellet gun that closely resembled the real thing.

The 15-year-old "had plenty of opportunities to lower the gun and listen to the officers' orders, and he didn't want to," Interim Police Chief Orlando Rodriguez said.

Shortly before the confrontation, the boy had walked into a classroom and punched a random boy in the nose for no apparent reason. Police did not know why he pulled out the weapon.

"We think it looks like this was a way to bring attention to himself," the police chief said.

The boy, identified as Jaime Gonzalez, did not threaten students or teachers, and no one else was hurt.

The officers "took the necessary action to protect themselves and the other kids," Rodriguez said. There weren't many others in the hall at the time, but "they had every right to take the action that they took."

Authorities declined to share what the boy said before being shot.

The shooting happened as classes were about to begin at Cummings Middle School in Brownsville. Teachers locked classroom doors and turned off lights, and some frightened students dove under their desks. They could hear police charge down the hallway and shout for Gonzalez to drop the weapon, followed by several shots.

Two officers fired three shots, hitting Gonzalez at least twice, police said.

The boy's godmother, Norma Leticia Navarro, said she couldn't imagine why he would have brought a gun to school.

I lost count but it's safe to say they have little knowledge of their weapons, how to use them properly and safely, the anatomy of a cow...

or WHAT A LARIAT IS.

Thing is, Sly's into self-defecating humor.

Did I say that right? ;)

Yes, you said what you intended to.

In all honesty, I've never really understood why you like to crap all over yourself like that. I suppose it's a unique mod technique, though. It's all good. :)

I don't really feel that I am crapping on myself. I'm not here to be the heavy or the boss or to babysit people. If discussions get so heated that someone feels the need to insult someone else they can insult me. I'm not telling people on how they should act, I'm not lecturing them on what they should post. I'm letting them vent. It seems to me that by doing that it tends to end the arguments instead of people trading insults post after post after post.

CAVE JUNCTION — An 82-year-old man who was assaulted Monday afternoon was able to fend off his attacker after shooting him in the foot during the attack at his home, police said.

The Josephine County Sheriff's Office said the 82-year-old victim shot David Roberson, 65, during an attempted assault at the man's home along the 2200 block of Dick George Road in Cave Junction.

Roberson lives nearby at 1440 Dick George Road.

He is being held in lieu of $75,000 bail at the Josephine County Jail on attempted kidnapping, fourth-degree assault and resisting arrest charges.

Additional details about the assault were not available.

The relationship between both individuals is still under investigation.

Police said Roberson's attempted assault was thwarted when the victim pulled a gun he had on him and shot Roberson in the foot.

Roberson fled in his truck. He was later arrested when sheriff's deputies saw him driving through downtown Cave Junction.

They pursued him to Kerby Main Line Road and arrested him. Authorities took him to Three Rivers Community Hospital to have his gunshot wound treated.

The man and his 71-year-old spouse both suffered facial injuries during the attack.

The man also suffered a knee injury. Both refused medical treatment.

My view is that schoolyard insults are boring but harmless, but insults delivered with wit are a pleasant treat!
