'Hundreds' of New Yorkers may already be infected with polio, Empire state health chief warns - as the virus is detected in wastewater of a SECOND county
  • New York's health chief warns that hundreds of residents of the state may already be infected with polio
  • Officials reported their first case of the virus in years last month, signaling there are likely many other asymptomatic cases not being tracked
  • The first case was detected in Rockland County, while two polio samples were found in wastewater in Orange County
  • Officials are urging residents to get vaccinated to prevent a resurgence of the devastating virus
New York officials are warning that hundreds of Empire state residents may already be infected with the devastating polio virus after it was detected in wastewater of a second county in the state.

State surveillance detected presence of the polio virus in at least two different areas of Orange County, New York - around an hours drive from New York City - in June and July. It comes within weeks of officials announcing a confirmed polio case in Rockland County - just northwest of the Big Apple's Bronx borough. The virus was also detected in Rockland wastewater last month.

Scary stuff!
I used to live in Orange County,NY.
Has the Delaware and the Hudson river running through it. Ive hung out on the same shoreline as George Washington. Neither of us had polio.
 
Part of having a fairly open border is there will be those that are unvaccinated entering. If I were travel to another country I would need vaccinations which I am in favor of.
If we are going to allow lose border crossings we should have vaccination stations, hopefully they do?

Really valid points in all honesty. I’m sure we do have regulations for immigration and travel, but I’m not sure how strict they are and they obviously do nothing for illegal immigration.

It’s also an interesting situation for Anti-Vaxers.

I think I am probably vaccinated for Polio. Most are, aren’t they? At least those born in the 80’s or later.

There should be no arrests at the border. Unless somebody is actually a criminal. Anybody without proper paperwork or ID should be fingerprinted, DNA sample taken, and given an immigrant ID and vaccinated with instructions on how to get boosters for free, etc.

Anybody without a place to go should be put up in housing until vaccinations could be completed and a place figured out for them to go.

Those who have no place to go should be given jobs as support staff, etc until they are ready to go through and have a plan as to where to go, and money to get there.

People in need should be eager to get to our borders because we are kind and will help. These people are nearly all willing to work, and they work hard.

This would nearly eliminate all problems with illegal immigration. Then nearly everybody trying to sneak through the dessert would be up to something nefarious. We could easily have an eye in the sky searching for people in the desert, just sending border patrol to catch/help the rare person who does try to get through.

This is not an overly complicated problem to solve. We just don't want to solve it.

Various administration going back aways have refused to execute, manage immigration.
 
With global warming I think we can all expect more and more funk to rise up out of the primordial soup of our planet. I had to get fully vaccinated when I moved overseas in order to get a work permit or green card and my son in turn had to provide vaccinations to register for public school in Wilsonville when we returned stateside....the military will vaccinate everyone upon joining. I thought this was part of being a first world country. We may have to start colonies for anti vaxxers like we did with leprosy victims.

And build a wall to keep them out. We'll call the colony "the deep south".

No, it's not the case that other countries require you to have vaccinations for inbound travel. And similarly, the US doesn't check either.

(aside from Covid-19, and in a few cases, yellow fever)
