Pope: It's 'terrible' kids taught they can choose gender

I kept expecting to read this was from The Onion.

The pope said he wanted to conclude his remarks by reflecting on this: “We are living a moment of annihilation of man as image of God.”

I kept expecting to read this was from The Onion.
Why? Because this guy finally started speaking as you'd expect The Pope to speak?

Every time I recall reading something about him he has seemed more open minded than I'd expected.

We keep enabling this mental health problem in America. We reap what we sow, mentally unstable people who think their current gender is "not what they are supposed to be".

While I'm not really in favor of the progressive ideals regarding gender, I think the Pope is misrepresenting the position with which he disagrees. I've never seen anyone claim that people can simply "choose" their gender; my understanding of the updated perspective is that people identify the gender that they feel were born, and alter their physicality as necessary to match their internal self-perception.

Please--anyone feel free to correct me if I have that wrong.

They may act on their gender identity by having surgery (at the one "extreme."), but I think you're right about self perception.

If the Pope wants to rant about people changing the image of God, then all cosmetic surgery should be his complaint.

Platypus, you are correct. Children and adults for that matter don't "choose" their gender. Transgender people don't choose to go through all the shit they endure, any more than gays and lesbians. They just are. And have been for all human history. The Pope needs to learn some facts. Or keep quiet about things he knows nothing about. If spouting prejudice and ignorance is what a pope is "supposed" to do, like the old saying goes, thank god I'm an atheist.

Catholic priests preaching about the choices children must endure....go figure...let's have celibate counselors teaching sexual ethics and birth control to children...that's always had good results eh?

Anorexics want liposuction, who are you to stop them?

Anorexics and schizophrenics just are and probably have been throughout human history

Deaf people have been around forever, cochlear implants? Fuck that, why fix something God made?

We should NOT discriminate against people who have unfortunate conditions like this. If we can fix it we should try. If fixing it is surgery then by all means go for it. If fixing it is a new drug that alters brain chemistry then go for it.

That the new Pope is finally trying to go along with his fairy-tale beliefs is fine with me. Every time he says something I expect it to be directly opposed to everything they've preached for years.

That's fine do what they want to their bodies.

I start having issues when they start requesting to have rights of another gender, or when taxpayers have to pay for their 'transformation'. That is when the collective "we" start enabling them.

FYI, both of these examples are mental health disorders and should be addressed at the root cause.

Ever heard of tumblr?

How does that affect you? And what exactly are you talking about? Bathroom laws? No justice! No pee! Seriously, people just want to use the bathroom. Get over it.

or when taxpayers have to pay for their 'transformation'.
The government spends lots of money on stuff I don't agree with.

I know, I was being sarcastic.

As for anorexics getting Liposuction, physicians take an oath. They won't do things that are harmful.

My uncle almost cut his lower leg off with a chainsaw. They saved the leg but it caused him trauma for the rest of his life. He wanted it removed. They wouldn't because it was a viable limb. He became addicted to pain killers and booze. Ruined his life. He would have had to remove it himself.

If an anorexic buys a lipo machine and does it at home, fine. No doctor should do it.

I surgically altered my body when I got my ears pierced. If I get Lasix I will be further surgically altering my body. If you get a vasectomy you are surgically altering your body. If you have a disfiguring or way our of proportion physical feature you get plastic surgery for you are surgically altering your body. Not all transpeople undergo gender correction surgery. But damn near everyone, at least in Western countries, does surgically alter their bodies in some say.

The Pope should get real and explain why his priests fornicated with children and APOLOGIZE to all the faiths about his com padres. thtreachery hell.jpg thtreachery hell.jpg

You mean like peeing? I didn't know one gender had the monopoly on that.

Peeing? They can pee in their room they are originally supposed to go in. You don't agree that's fine. I don't agree that it should be up for a debate. Oh well.

shrug? Looks like you misquoted me.
Not really. They're your words, no matter how you want to qualify them.

I'm not against giving people rights. Better the people than government. Especially when there's zero harm done.

"Not really ". No you did. But that's ok. Well agree to disagree and move on. My thoughts on people changing genders are not the popular vote in this liberal state , and that's ok. But I know first hand how this mental disease can affect your family as it has mine. In a supremely negative way.

Your family has gender-labeled restrooms and one of you uses the 'wrong' restroom?

There's a simpler solution. Just put the seat down afterwards.

My own "brother" came out as trans at 25. This came after her coming out as a lesbian at 21. Growing up, she acted as the quintessential effeminate girl to anyone who knew her. There was absolutely no family pressure towards this behavior. Our hippie mother died when she was four, and her father took her away from us for many years lying to her about the rest of her siblings, including the two of his own whom he abandoned. So, I have no doubt she has identity issues related to that, but from 13, when she came back into my life, up until she was 25, she gave no impression that she felt masculine or behaved in a masculine manner. Color me completely surprised when at 25 she's now saying she's a man. I do know who she began hanging out with and what kind of therapist she started seeing soon after she came out as a lesbian. I do believe there are cases of brainwashing in susceptible people such as my "brother".

Paine Tablet, I don't like to comment on individual cases since I don't know the people. But do you know what was really in your brother's head? I'm no expert on brainwashing and doubt you are. I am totally suspicious of shrinks, period. But it still seems unlikely someone could be "brainwashed" into changing his/her gender.

Best IMHO is just accept your brother for who he is, even if you disagree.
