Portland Coach- And Then There Were Two

And Kaleb has never worked under (and learned from) a really good NBA coach.

Some here say, we'll lose for 1-2 years anyway, so a bad coach can't hurt. But it takes years to unload a bad coach. The city has to turn against him for about 3 years before Paul Allen has the nerve to fire him. Allen's afraid of the local media haters.

Whether it's Canales or Stotts, we will suck at coaching for at least 4 years, long after the player talent level deserves better.

I have really turned against Olshey's strategy now. I'm getting to hate him.

Hubie made the Grizzlies look fucking amazing for a while.

BNM, you may be right that everyone has a price, if a tad cynical!

but...

None of us know the behind the scenes process.
However, let's consider Paul Allen offers Phil Jackson $20 million to coach the Blazers and Jackson says no. So Allen offers $50 million and Jackson still says no. Allen then offers $100 million and Jackson says, hell, I don't really want the job but who could turn down that chunk of change?

How good would he be, how committed, to a job he didn't really want, a team he didn't really want, a city he didn't really want to live in? Would he be willing to put in the extra time and attention that this team of young players is going to need? Especially if the money was guaranteed?

I've known people who took jobs or transfers they didn't want because the money was too good to pass up (admittedly not $100 million) and admitted it was a mistake, they were miserable, they did not do as well as they should because they just wanted to get the hell out.

I don't know. You don't know. None of us know what went on behind the scenes. And because we don't have facts I'm reserving judgment. I'm not excited about the two choices, but I'm not sure what the other options were. I do think the fact that neither Malone nor Shaw were offered head coaching jobs anywhere is telling. If they are so hot, why didn't they get offers?

As for Maris' contention that the Blazers could have gotten Popovitch by paying the Spurs to allow them to negotiate with him, I'm no expert on either NBA rules or contract law. I doubt if Maris is either. But in most cases a contract can't be broken because someone has a better offer. If anyone can show me otherwise, show evidence the Blazers could, simply by paying out, gotten Popovich, I'm listening.

I've only heard of that happening with assistant coaches. I've never heard of a team letting a head coach out of his contract to go somewhere else.

So, what are the odds that the mystery 5th candidate gets the job?

Hmm so I guess that PA is flying Stotts over to London on his dime during the Olympics to meet with him just to keep up the appearance that KC was not the choice from the start. I thought PA was cutting down on frivolous spending?

When he said he was cutting down on frivolous spending, he meant he was only using 20s to wipe his ass from now on instead of 100s.

Either way, sounds like a bad way to give your b-hole a nasty infection.

Well that was fast... teleporation?

@jwquick: Trail Blazers owner Paul Allen has completed interviews in London with Terry Stotts and Kaleb Canales, The Oregonian has learned.

If they select Stotts they should do it while they are both still in London. Then maybe he and KC can bond on Paul's Yacht for a couple of days. Or is that too much to ask for from PA?

The first tweet was delayed 8 hours by NBC before being sent.

Of all the events I've defended in Blazer history, this is the one that I won't. Intentionally destroying our coaching just makes me hate Olshey.

Bernie Bickerstaff is 50 times the coach that Canales is. Canales was made Coach for the novelty, because it would only be for a month. Bernie has enormous experience, but everyone figured we'll hire a promising yet experienced assistant coach (much better than Bickerstaff) in a couple of months, so what does it matter.

Now that we have 2 pieces of shit as finalists, I just HATE OLSHEY.

...PA, with his megayacht camped out in London, should host anyone from the current/former Team USA that wants to join in on the docked Octopus booze cruise! That might be just the edge we need in recruiting any potential FA's in the future :pimp:

Bickerstaff??? You gotta be kidding me! He SUCKS!

I hope stotts gets it and caleb is the assistant. if stotts doesn't work then we can hire canales. I'll be numb to the decision either way

I didn't expect love at first sight, but they sure are parading out the uggos for this episode of the Bachelor.

What are the odds there even is a 'mystery 5th candidate'? Slim, I'd wager.

Only someone pretty frickin arrogant, who feels that no matter who they choose would have success would have these two as finalists. Just how great does Paul Allen think he is? What has he ever done to ever come with a feeling that he doesn't mistakes when it comes to basketball decisions? This here reeks of utter arrogance from someone, whether it be the dude that hired Vinny Del Negro to lead his squad in LA or Paul Allen. Let me remind you Paul, you have never won anything. And it's going on 13 straight years with a series victory in the playoffs. Whoever you choose, I hope it humbles you.

We now swing 180 degrees, from overpaying coach and (attempted) deep roster, to tanking for years while waiting for high draft picks. Olshey's plan is to find the worst players and coaches, so that we depend on Jeffries, Pavlovich, Price, and the new coach.

This 180 degree turnaround in philosophy proves that Allen does indeed follow the wishes of his GM. For those who claim (without evidence) that he won't let the GM run the show, you have been Olshlapped.

I don't make mistakes.

I'm AWESSSSSOMMMME!

Canales is the obvious choice for this roster. Had we landed Hibbert and Batum this coaching discussion would be completely different. The players we have (Aldridge) like and respect Canales. We're now in rebuilding mode (again). Canales is the obvious choice. All along? No. We sign Hibbert and Batum we would not be talking about Canales being our HC.

I'm glad we let Batum go. It's crucial for players to have an easy coach whom they like and respect. Who wants a mean one who is hard on them.

Canales is not the right choice, at all. He wouldn't be no matter what the roster looked like. He wouldn't be the right choice if all of our players were Mexican-American and fucking adored him. This is about basketball, not about who likes who the most.

Hey, atleast Del Negro could get the Clips out of the first round.
