Depth, depth, depth.

The Portland Trail Blazers don't have it. But they certainly need it.

Through the team's first 10 games, only five backups are playing at least 10 minutes per contest—Steve Blake (21.6), Chris Kaman (19.3), Allen Crabbe (14.8), C.J. McCollum (12.6) and Will Barton (10.9). Problem is, Kaman has been the only beneficial second-string player, as the rest have struggled immensely. And when the group is isolated to the wing players, it looks even worse.

Per Basketball-Reference.com, Crabbe has produced a player efficiency rating of just 10.0. McCollum has been slightly better with his 11.1 PER, but Barton has been borderline unplayable with a PER of just 2.5. Nonetheless, Rip City has to soldier on with him in the rotation due to a dearth of alternative options.

An upgrade is necessary.

McCollum should still receive plenty of minutes due to his immense upside and youthful nature, but Portland needs a consistent veteran like Brewer if it hopes to make the next step in a difficult Western Conference. Expecting all five starters to remain healthy throughout the year is foolish, especially given the burdens they endured in 2013-14 and surely will experience once more during the current campaign. And as a result, finding an insurance policy like Brewer is vital.

Is Brewer the perfect fit for this squad? Not particularly, as his gambling wouldn't work ideally within the confines of Terry Stotts' schemes. Plus, he's not a particularly great half-court player on offense, and the Blazers haven't been one of the league's faster teams thus far.

Nonetheless, he's a fit simply because he's a workable body who would help provide that much-needed depth on the wings.

What Portland Would Offer: Dorell Wright and a second-round pick

ORLY? How many backups do we need playing >10 minutes a game? 10? 20? If anything, five seems like too many.

ORLY? Not a good fit? I'm Sold!!1! Do it Olshaye!

This is written by someone who 1) doesn't watch and just looks at the numbers and 2) doesn't understand the numbers. Sample size matters, especially when looking at Will Barton.

Blake has been very good at defense and keeping the ball moving, exactly what we want from him. He just hasn't scored much, which isn't his role anyway. Crabbe just got his first real extended stints at NBA games, and his PER may not have been great but most of that is because he had a couple less that stellar shooting nights, but I'd well known to be an excellent shooter. So give the man a break, he will be a better fit and hopefully a better player than brewer by the end of the season.

Dorell Wright and a 2nd rounder sounds fair.

If he's good enough to displace Crabbe as Nic's backup, they should be able to get more for him than Wright.

If he's not good enough to garner better offers for him than that, then he likely wouldn't be able to help us much.

Damn. CJ only has a PER of 11.1? Crabbe at 10?

Almighty Corey Brewer has a career PER of a whopping 12.2. How could we ever do without him?

Bleacher Reporter are so early season... They can talk all they want about our bench, which had a shitty first 3 games. But from that point on, we've been a sexy, solid, in your face, fuck you in the asshole BENCH!

Lol they are linking Corey brewer to every playoff team in the west.

Trob is pissed. Who's he gonna block now?

Pretty safe to say that would be the first question he was asked when he got here.

"Hi Corey, welcome to Rip City! Say, how did it feel when Thomas Robinson embarrassed the shit of out of you with that block last year? Corey? Where are you going Corey?"

I would do Wright and a 2nd round pick for Brewer without blinking.

I wouldn't. At least not without knowing dame's reaction. We know Dame has complained all his best friends are sent packing. Write is dames best friend on the Blazers now, or at least that was reported over the offseason. Write is part of the package to keep Dame happy and re-signing. Unless the trade for write includes getting back someone who is starter quality I pass.

So tired of this bench bullshit. No depth? We just won a game without Aldridge AND Batum.

Yes I think we could use some wing depth, but not brewer.

I know it's total bullshit man. They've just been saying it for so long that they assume it's what it is. Just more proof they don't pay attention and talk from their shit hole

Stupid. Our bench has played great the last few games. No to Brewer.

Dame wouldn't give a chit. He wants players that are gonna help win. End of story.

It's a team game. Our individual backups may not have gaudy numbers, but as a unit they are doing well. Could we use a drop dead scoring sixth man wing? Sure. But you don't make a trade unless the trade fills a need, with a player who fits the need, and then only if that's the best deal you're going to get. Corey Brewer aint it. Trading for him 'just because' isn't a very good reason. So far, CJ, Crabbe, and Meyers are showing good progress. At the very least, they aren't hurting us. Let's play our hand for a while and see how our young guys respond.

I think I would definitely give him a look for the price of Wright and future pick or 2.

And I'm confident you would have a better rationale than the article some of us so gleefully critiqued. ;)
