The newborn calf is the property of a private company, Have Trunk Will Travel, of Perris, Calif., which assumes ownership of the newborn within a month.

After reading the Seattle Times two part article on elephants in zoos I think it's time the Oregon Zoo got out of the elephant business.

Not sour grapes. You should read the article. I don't think there are any zoos that should keep elephants. Sounds like the sanctuaries in warmer weather climates is what is best for them.

Zoos that require another elephant to breed there female too always have the contract that the zoo has in place now. Its that of the first six elephants born 2, 4, 6 go to the males owner or zoo. Usually if its a private owner and not a zoo they will try and work out a deal to keep the baby elephant at the zoo.
