Jesus was a socialist for what it's worth...destroyed the temple of the money lenders....revolted against the local authority...was arrested and executed. Now it seems the money lender is the representative of Christian values? I have nothing against anyone's religious principals but to put Trump in the same light spiritually as say, Jimmy Carter is beyond a stretch. Now the GOP looks at Jimmy Carters habitat for humanity as another commie plot aimed at helping what Trump calls shithole countries....pretty fuckin' far from Christian values....that in my book is hypocrisy at it's worst. Jesus also hung out with a career hooker.....which would have shocked any preacher in the conservative camp....I learned one thing from war....prayer does not make people drop their weapons and join in a group hug. In my view it's controlled breathing that lowers the heart rate and allows your chant to have clarity...which is a good thing but at this point in my life...it's transcendental meditation more than a chat line. If what you call prayer gives you great comfort..that's a good thing but if you believe some unseen entity is doing anything but calming down your own emotional strings....I think you probably need that father figure...Jesus loved the brown immigrants and welcomed them to his circle of trust. Trump calls them rapists and murderers....

I think it's good for evangelicals Christians to see our hypocrisy in the face (I'm a Christian too btw), I think it's good for our culture to see how bad things can be, how intolerance, racism, etc still has an ugly face, it's good for us as a society to if we're willing look at our selves and ask how did we get here and how do we change courses. Eventually, Trump will be out of the office and we will have a chance as a society and culture to DO SOMETHING about these problems.

I guess thats one way to look at it. However, the other side of this is that he is emboldening people with their current hateful beliefs, and dividing the country so much that to undo this (if thats remotely possible) will take years and years, and my kids (and their kids) will have to deal with unraveling this mess. See, I dont think this gets undone in a year or two, like another President comes along and poof! its better now. These issues that are "coming out of the woodwork" as you say, have been given legitimacy by this clown. Changing that will take decades.

Of course, it doesn't just change, but it can be a low moment that spurs change, very rarely does a society about-face because a new president shows up. I guess maybe it's just wishful thinking but I hope that this is a time for self-examination for really everyone (including myself) to try to make long term changes for the better in ourselves and our society.

I hear what you are saying, and dont think you are wrong. I just think we went backwards the past three years, unnecessarily. Like we had a leaking roof and instead of fixing the leaks, we just took the roof off and are starting from scratch.

You might be right, but in a lot of ways, I think that a lot of the lies and deception and hypocrisy that was there had in a lot of ways been neatly hidden out of our minds and while we were aware of it, we could easily just escape it somewhere else. It's kind of right in our face now. Whether that was all "Trump", or just the dam would break eventually I'm not sure but it's here. I hope I'm a mature enough adult to look at myself and examine myself through it.

They weren't money lenders...they were money changers who changed the standard Greek and Roman money for Jewish and Tyrian shekels. Jerusalem was packed with Jews who had come for Passover and needed to purchase the animal sacrifices. Anyway, they were completely corrupt in within those practices. That's why Jesus tossed them out of the temple.

yeah....I read it back in high school...anyway you got the completely corrupt part right but the obedience to existing laws seems vague and allegiance to the heads of state....Jesus didn't give a shit about the heads of state or their laws. In today's climate he'd be labeled as ANTIFA or something which was my point all along.

Since this thread has turned into a discussion of religion, I highly recommend the book "small gods" by Terry Pratchett. It is probably the finest bit of religious writing ever put to paper.

It includes some of the following nuggets of wisdom:

“Sometimes the crime follows the punishment, which only serves to prove the foresight of the Great God."

“You can’t inspire people with facts. They need a cause. They need a symbol.”

My guess is as with most "religious" writing's, what's "great" is usually what fits into our cognitive bias' to begin with.
Edit: I don't mean this disrespectfully, I know I am guilty of this as well.

It sounds familiar I think I may have read this once upon a time.

Terry Pratchett is a fantasy writer - his discworld series is world famous for his satire.

As to your claim of bias - I am certain you are right - I think that the medium of satire can at times present things logically when discussing "loaded" matters by disassociating them from the real things.

The main point this book is making, one that I am certain everyone will agree (even if not about his/her own god) is that man created gods and god only matters when people believe in them.
