Terry Pratchett is a fantasy writer - his discworld series is world famous for his satire.

As to your claim of bias - I am certain you are right - I think that the medium of satire can at times present things logically when discussing "loaded" matters by disassociating them from the real things.

The main point this book is making, one that I am certain everyone will agree (even if not about his/her own god) is that man created gods and god only matters when people believe in them.
That's probably where I know his name from, I love fantasy writing Tolkien, CS Lewis, RA Salvatore, Jordan, Raymond E. Feist, Eddings, Terry Brooks, Pratchett sounds really familiar, but I could be off.

If you have seen the recent Amazon adaption of Good Omens - it is based on a collaboration between Pratchett and Neil Gaiman (another fantastic author).

I'm like 6 years behind my TV watching lol. I still need to watch GoT's at some point... I keep finding myself watching Arrested Development for like the 100th time.

$3G 'Jesus Shoes' filled with holy water sell out within minutes

That’s a holy lot of money.

A limited-edition sneaker, which is filled with holy water in the soles and blessed by a priest, sold out within minutes of its debut, despite each pair costing a whopping $3,000.

Brooklyn-based creative label MSCHF is responsible for releasing the shoe, which is a pair of all-white Nike Air Max 97s -- though the design is in no way affiliated with Nike -- that have been injected with holy water sourced from the Jordan River. The water, which is visible in the see-through sole, has some coloring added to enhance visibility, the shoe’s creator told Fox News.

The kicks, succinctly called “Jesus Shoes,” also feature the Bible verse Matthew 14:25 — the passage describing Jesus walking on water — and a single blood drop to represent the blood of Christ.

Among the other religious details are the frankincense-scented insoles, a crucifix threaded through the laces, and a red sole, which references the red shoes traditionally worn by past Popes.

The shoebox itself also displays an angel and a seal that resembles the official papal seal.

I am usually not up to date as well (trying to finish Breaking Bad at this point) - but anything that is based on Pratchett / Gaiman work and includes the best Doctor Who ever (David Tennant) - is a cultural event that no one at my home is waiting for.

Why can't I think of scams like this?

that have been injected with holy water sourced from the Jordan River.

I have gone rafting down the Jordan river. I am available (at $3,000 a pop + travel expenses) for your events - weddings, christening, bar mitzvas, quinceaneras, house of representative depositions. You name it.

The New York Times in one of their million or so "understand Trump supporters" articles noted that he retains a small base of support among Latino voters despite overt racism, especially those who are evangelical Christians. They interviewed a Latino evangelical Christian minister who said during the 2016 campaign and in the first months of Trump presidency he was appalled by Trump's racism, vulgarity, corruption, treatment of women, etc. Then he came to realize Trump was appointed by god to get rid of legal abortion and marriage equality for same sex couples; therefore, he can't criticize anything Trump does because to criticize Trump would be to criticize god.

Not making this up.

I'm an atheist so I vote on issues.

Don't you think that the implication of this statement is a bit unfair to those of us on the board who are Christians? While there are certainly Christians who support Trump, there are many who do not. Most Christians also vote on issues.

I don't see anything unfair. She didn't generalize about all Christians anywhere in her post. She merely mentioned what 1 man said and did.

When people flock to see a miracle in this day and age it amazes me....but it gives so much joy to them that it has to be a good thing..any love in the world helps the cause in my view

yet I still love to go to a Cathedral on Easter Sunday and hear mass....it fills my soul even though I'm pretty much a pagan

The implication that I was speaking of is the corollary inference that while atheists vote on issues, Christians do not. Maybe that wasn't crandc's intent, but it came across that way to me.

I have no problem with people on here having differing viewpoints on Christianity. I don't come here to proselytize. I do think that it's always wise to not make over generalizations about any group of people. The range of branches and denominations of folks who identify as Christian is pretty broad, as are their takes on a whole wide lot of issues. And that doesn't begin to get at charlatans who use the mantle of Christianity for personal power and advantage.

The original meaning of Pagan comes from the Latin Pagus which means country-dweller (as in, non urban). This does not really contradicts being Christian.

Of course, during the middle ages it came to describe the Britons that believed in all kinds of early gods when the Roman empire extended to Britannia - and became a religious description.

Agree, just speaking for myself. I don't have to ask what any divine being wants.

Well put. I suppose we both read her post differently and took slightly different ideas out of it. I respect all who respect others regardless of religious (or nonreligious) background.

I'll be reading this book when I get to Florida in a few days. I'm thinking it'll be an interesting read...

I wasn't saying all Christians. My point was this minister at first was repelled by racism, misogyny, greed, etc. I was raised in an obervant Jewish family but I have some idea of the claimed teachings of Jesus and his objections were in line with them. But he decided to ignore all that over abortion and marriage equality, neither of which Jesus mentioned. Even beyond that support, he now says Trump can't be criticized for anything. He overthrew Jesus for Trump and says that is what God wants.

But, he is your savior

Well, as an example, I know that the prayers of my parents...and their church family worked for me because I would have been the LAST person one would think would become a believer in Jesus Christ. No doubt in my mind I'd not be living today considering the activities I was involved in.

At any rate, I highly doubt that I'm going to convince you...or anyone else in here....on a message board of how the power of God can be unleashed thru prayer. I'll just leave it at that. I know that I know that I know it works...and I'm good with that. I'll continue to pray for others, things, and my my wife and myself, and watch the results. Do my prayers ALWAYS get answered the way I'd like? No. But, invariably, I look back and thank God that they didn't. There's at least one thing I do know for certain: God always knows best...and I'm entirely good/grateful with that.

BTW, it doesn't matter a whit that Lincoln's call was in 1863. Precedent is precedent. Just ask our court system. They'll go back to the end of time to find basis. Obviously, Lincoln was one of our greatest presidents. I'm not throwing out what he says with the bathwater.
Every Sunday before service I pray to be a better:
1. Christian;
2. Husband;
3. American;
4. Family member;
5. Human Being.
I ask for the guidance to get there.
I expect this to be a life long project.
