With RLEC, I buy that maybe there weren't any good deals out there that looked better than our FA prospects (RJ was nothing special and Carter's production has dropped to average starter level -- Miller's better and cheaper than both of them). There shouldn't be any excuses now. Still, no deal is better than a bad deal (longterm).

i think its his love affair with these average players.

guys like bayless, rudy, batum, webster are decnt role players but thats it. maybe...maybe batum could be more but i dont know. they are great vs the bobcats or bucks but vs top quality opponents they are merely average.

No, it's not always a win-lose situation. It can be win-win if you trade to a team with a different system. The fast break teams are Phoenix, Golden State, New York, etc. Frye is better in Phoenix than he was in McMillan's system. That's why you see the rumor of Rudy to Phoenix. He is worth more to them than he ever will be to us for 2 reasons--they have an uptempo game, and redundancy (he plays the same position as our best player).

OK, so Rudy for Amare? It's hard to find a win-win for most teams. Lately it's been a salary dump for most teams, or a team looking to start from scratch. I still don't see how our loose ends will equate to anything of value to another team.

I forgot to mention Paul Allen's money. Every trade Pritchard has ever made (all 1 1/2 of them) has been greased by adding in a few million to motivate the other side. If you leave out the money, it looks like the trade was in our favor. But the other owner thinks like a regular person--he values those millions as part of the trade.

Anyway, the way we can get more than we give is if you ignore the money we routinely add in. We get more player for less player that way. So that's another answer to your generic question, how could we come out ahead in a trade.

And you have to ask, why do trades ever happen? There are good reasons, and all Pritchard has to do is capitalize upon the reasons that the other teams have to trade. I mean, if you're right that it's impossible to work a trade in our favor, then there should never be any trades, ever.

I agree that there is no point in making a trade that is only focused on this season. My concern, is that the Blazers see in season trades ONLY in terms of "win now." Mid season trades can help a team in both the short and long terms. (eg the Lakers trading for Gasol)

In other words, I agree with Mixum that the team needs to be open minded about making a deal, and shouldn't just take a wait-and-see approach. Whether I would agree with him on the benefits of a specific trade is a whole other issue.
