You may want to make it a public poll first.

EDIT - wasn't there initially.

What does Pro-Oden and Anti-Oden mean?

This is me:

I'm extremely disappointed in his play and in his injuries (not his fault, but just as disappointing), but I do hope he gets better and becomes an active player in this league, if not a dominant force. It doesn't look good, but I absolutely want him to do well. That game against the Knicks (17 pts, 12 rebs, 6 blks) gives me hope.

I mean, what the fuck is Anti-Oden? Who on earth wants him to play badly?

Just saw your poll now. I'm definitely the first. And Oden, if he develops, is a better complimentary player to what we're trying to do than Durant would be. As for whether he'll be a dominant force or a bust, no one knows. If you're gonna pick one, you have to pick the first one no matter what you think. If you pick the other one and are proven right, that's no fun at all.

Bill Simmons. Every fan of every other team in the NBA. Anyone who ever went to Michigan and who isn't a Blazer fan (you've been very forgiving of him being a Buckeye).

Bill Simmons rarely has a pro-Blazer article. Do you really expect anything different?

I can't participate in your poll because the two options are extremes that don't reflect my thinking at all.

For the record, I'm still glad that we drafted Oden. Durant is a talented scorer, but those types of players are much more common than dominating big men. I think Oden still has a chance to be that.

Am I disappointed in Oden so far? Yes. Do I think less of him than I did when he was drafted? Yes. Am I growing more skeptical of him with each passing day? Yes.

But . . . do I still hope and pray he turns into a great center? YES. YES. YES!

come on man, take a stance and roll the dice. I'm disappointed in Oden this year but I still believe, so I am pro-Oden.

This sums up my feelings as well.

So you admit it is a roll of the dice and no longer a sure thing.

no, it was a figure of speech. i think give him time and we'll be good. right now, at this moment, i'm disappointed he's not more agressive offensively and is picking up too many fouls...which is what lots of pre-draft analysis was.

Hey, you're the one who defined "pro-Oden" as "Yes, Oden will be a valuable commodity to multiple championships." That's a huge statement that I can't say with any confidence right now. If you had defined "pro-Oden" as "Yes, I think he will still develop into a quality big man who can anchor this team defensively for many years," I probably would have said, "Yes." That seems much more reasonable to me.

I believe Oden on the blazers will keep us in the championship scene for as long as he's here, well...when he sacks up in the next year or two. I'm not saying he's guaranteeing championships, but he is a commodity if we are to win them. I think without his contributions, we won't win with what we have (or his replacement in theory in KD)

Fine. I can live with that. You do realize, however, that you are backtracking from the choice you stated in your poll?

" . . . Oden will be a valuable commodity to multiple championships . . . "

Does that not suggest that Oden will help the Blazers win multiple championships, or am I just crazy?

he will be valuable to multiple championships. however, i never believe anything is guaranteed...i go by the motto "its not over till its over". if the blazers win championships, Oden will be a primary commodity.

My God, man, you're playing slippery games with the English language. I'm not going to debate you any longer, however. It's 2:40 in the morning here on the East Coast, and I'm off to bed . . .

+1

If I had to make a prediction, I'd say that he'll become an all-star center several times in his career but will never be a legit #1 option or a superstar like Howard. I'd guess that Durant will always be the better player due to simple talent, health, and mentality. Who wins more championships will depend on a lot of other factors, impossible to say. Basically, the Blazers will end up regretting not taking Durant, even if Oden is a top-5 center in the league.

But those are just educated guesses, nobody knows exactly how Oden will turn out. I imagine this season he's been faced for the first time in his life with the question: "am I really a once-in-a-generation center?" Before that, even in college, there's been a near-unanimous consensus that he's a hall of famer waiting to happen. The realization that maybe he's not must be tough. Here's hoping he (and everyone) can be happy with whatever caliber player he works his ass off into becoming.

To say you are Anti-Oden is to say you are a traitor. You can't be a Blazer fan and hope for Oden's demise.

Do I wish we had picked KD? Yes, w/o question. Do I think Oden will be a dominating Center/Central figure in multiple championships? No. But IF he can stay healthy and keep improving he'll be a top tier big man. Maybe 15/11/2. There just aren't many guys 7'0' and 280 that have his type of stength & athleticism. Maybe he's not as fluid and gracefull as the greats (Ewing, Robinson, Hakeem, Shaq) offensively, but I'd settle for less and be happy. Oden does not need to play like a HOF'er to satisfy me. I'm still "Pro Oden", even though this injury thing is maddening.

Can't say I'm surprised at the two people who voted "no" to this poll.

You know, a lot of people on this board were ready to pull the trigger on a trade for Stoudemire before the deadline. Stoudemire who has had the same microfracture surgery as Oden. Stoudemire who now has a detached retina that's keeping him out the rest of the season. And I seem to recall a whole lot of complaining and talk about how injury prone Brandon Roy was going to be when he missed a sizable portion of his first season with a heel injury. You know what? Basketball is a tough sport and even great players get injured. It sucks that this happened to Oden, but it's not nearly as big of an injury as the earlier one. He was just starting to find his rythym as a player before he got hurt and I'm sure he'll find it again once he's ready to play. No, I wouldn't swap him for Durant. I'm glad to see that so many here are still of the same mind.

an anonymous "insider" should print this thread out and leave it in Oden's gym bag (exclude this post though) :)

I picked the first choice. I think we made the right decision and still think Oden is going to be a elite center.

But I'd be happy even if we only won one championship with the core we have as long as we are contenders for a while. I mean wining a championship isn't easy. Some teams have never won one. We've only won one. Of course winning a few would be nice, but so many things can happen so I'd be very happy to have that feeling again even if it's just once more!

Pro-Greg! He will be just fine.
